Just curious if anyone has taken any of the Master Classes for directing? What did you find helpful, if anything? Ron Howard just made one and it looks pretty good. But I was just wondering if anyone has taken them? The cost seems reasonable.
I took the Herzog one, it was cool. I haven't taken advantage of the stuff like the message boards and whatnot, but for access to the lectures I'm fine with what i got. It's hard to argue with the price.
Again, it's largely just a bunch of video lectures, but I still think they're worth it.
I plan on taking at least one more, either Ron Howard or Scorcese.
I didn't take one, but I imagine it would be a good idea to take more than one. If you just take one, you're liable to get only one perspective, which can be limiting in some ways, especially when the director has a very personal and idiosyncratic approach (such as Werner Herzog does). If you take more than one course, you start seeing what the paramters are, and where you find yourself drawn to more, or alternatively challenged more. I think there might be some value in this, though ultimately, the old saw still applies: you learn most by *doing*.
Ray, thank you for the feedback, that's interesting.
i signed up thinking there were more classes available but realized all of the advertisements I've been looking at for the last year weren't even available yet. i watched the Herzog class and thought it was beyond bad so i cancelled after 2 days. i won't join it again as they don't have enough content yet as was so turned off by Herzog i probably won't bother with any others considering the price.
From what I've seen, most of those classes seems to be for the benefit of the teacher rather than the student... the Leibovitz class (still photography) was useless.
I just want to clarify that the Herzog one I took was mostly philosophizing, I think the Ron Howard one looks like the most nuts-and-bolts workhorse instruction.
He's not the most well-renowned filmmaker on there but his course looks like the most useful.
