Masking technique?

Hello. I am a total noob at that thing called masking. I've seen a few examples online for After Effects used for subtle and/or cool no budget special effects. So, to me, it seems a like a very useful thing for a no budget filmmaker like myself. But I don't have After Effects -- is it possible to do masking in Final Cut Pro 7?

Thank you!

EDIT: I should probably be specific on what I want. Explosions. Muzzle flash for guns. Gory effects like blowing a head off, etc.

You might try Motion, but I believe you are referring to compositing, and FCP is for the larger part, an editing application

Yes you can mask in FCP. There are several tools for it.

However, the OP indicates that he was interested in doing special effects -- I want. Explosions. Muzzle flash for guns. Gory effects like blowing a head off, etc.

While possible in FCP, these FX are more properly part of AE or Motion.
