Marymoor Park - Final Edit

disjecta

Lucky Duck
I haven't really lived with this long enough to know whether or not it is really the final edit but, as always, I'll give you a first look.

Questions were asked when I posted it as a work in progress so you might want to check there first in case a question you may have has already been answered: http://www.dvxuser.com/cgi-bin/DVX2/YaBB.pl?board=Clips;action=display;num=1091652257

This edit is just under 5 minutes long and is about 40mb, encoded using a tweaked version of the progessive quicktime setting of Sorenson Squeeze, enjoy it...

I just hit the "make it look cool" button.   :P

f6, pedestal -5 (varied in different shots)

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

either you own a flock of very well trained geese or you just have the best luck with your bird shots. absolutely beautiful!!! It has become my new thing to start and end my day by watching the marymoor park clip, your images and the music you've choosen have such a calming effect on me. again, beautiful work.

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

What program did you use to do the intro title sequence? Everything looks really good. Makes me miss Washington.

Don't own a flock of geese :) I'm very flattered by your remarks, thank you so much. I'm keenly aware of where and when my predictible subjects will be. Flocks of geese leave every 5 minutes like a train schedule at the park in the morning so it's not so hard to find them.

The titling was done in Premiere Pro using a gradient wipe transition and, as stated previously, the Pine Lake Films logo intro was done in After Effects.

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

Excellent work, as always. It's like taking a class in cinematography every time I view one of your posts.

I have a general inquiry about shooting into the sun. Is there a maximum amount of time you should leave your dvx pointed at the sun; is the in-camera ND filter enough; etc. It just seems a little scary, although I've seen some killer shots (your piece included) by using this technique. Any advice or rules of thumb would be terrific.

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

This is a heavily debated topic and one with many different opinions. It's never adviseable to point a camera directly at the sun for a long period of time. Short shots, I think, are fine. I've been doing this for years with my Sony DSR-250 and never had any issues.

The best way to protect the lens is to make sure that whatever ND combo you use allows the iris to open about 1 stop below maximum closing (f16 in the case of the DVX). That way, you can be sure that your lens is tolerating the intensity. For the most part if you are shooting only occasionally, I wouldn't worry about it.

So to answer your questions directly:

Don't point the camera directly at the sun for more than a few seconds, just enough to get a decent shot. If you have a lot of shots with direct sun, make sure you are completely prepared and know exactly what shots you want instead of fumbling around and exposing the camera's lens unnecessarily.

Keep an extra external ND filter handy in case there is a need to spend more time in the sun than you planned.

These are not hard and fast rules but just my own and ones I've used over the years. I haven't damaged a camera yet and, given there is a plethora of opinions about this, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

Once again I am impressed with your work. Beautiful shots, clean editing, the right selection of music...

There must be something I don't like... hmm, that one duck. Yeah, that's it, that duck really blew it's line. You should can that duck and get another! :D

Heh heh sorry... Actually, my only compaint is that it ended too soon. I wanted more. Keep up the great work.

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

I'm new to this board and your work is so amazing. I love watching your work. Great job!

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

Love your work. its nice just to sit and watch and relax do it. The only thing between the logo and the moon shot in the black bring in the crickets there or have the logo piano fade out under the black.

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

Yeah, that is a nice park. We used to take my dog there to breed with another pug. I guess it was kind of romantic for them or something.

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

Disjecta,

Once more you have impressed me with your work. Dude, you are very talented.

I quite liked the flow of the shots with the music, which I hadn't realised that you mentioned in your previous post that it was from Cold Mountain. I haven't seen it yet. :-[, But will do soon.

I loved everything in the clip. Specially the moon at the biginning.

Oh, amost forgot. The logo looks fantastic. Really Cool! Is that the name of your production company?

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

Absolutely beautiful. I had to show this to my inlaws last night since they know I do video production work , they loved it, my mother-in-law said she would watch your move when she is not having a good day, it's totally peaceful. We don't see black bunnies here! I've watched that bridge shot many times already, was that shot at 24p then slowed down?

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

Gary - That was a good suggestion, I tried it in the original and it flows better, thanks.

araujofh - Pine Lake Films is the name of my company

donbarzini - The shot you are referring to was done with a Glidecam at 24pa and then slowed down by 50%

Thanks for the comments... :D

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

Congratulations.
It's really beautiful. :D
(It could be the beginning of a great feature, especially with the introduction of the bridge shot)

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

Disjecta,
how do yo ualways get that format?? Do you shoot squeeze and then on top of that do you crop top and bottom?? Btw great video..makes ma sad that to see those bunnies running around so freely. Can yuo imagine how good they have to taste with red wine and lemon?? ;D ;D

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

Yes, I shoot squeeze mode and have a mental sense of the 2:35:1 ratio when I frame. I then letterbox the widescreen and crop it for the Web version using Sorenson Squeeze.

As for the bunnies, hmmm, you better keep your hands off :D

Re: Marymoor Park - Final Edit

That was stunningly beautful.

I have one odd suggestion, on the web page you show the film on, I would use a darker background color. The white creates a hug contrast and I felt like I was missing some of the nuances of your film's color.

Other than that it was truly inspirational.
