Fresh off the pixel press:

Hopefully Martin will chime in on this thread later and give us some thoughts...

[edit: just watched on my Apple TV/Panasonic plasma combo. Double fantastic. I have pretty much zero reservations about this camera now. I really really wish I could have seen this in 4K in Culver City last night]

[edit 2: If you don't see an embedded video above, here's the link: https://vimeo.com/54571154 ]

Yeah, and he made it downloadable. I just pulled down the 1080p .mp4. It really looks amazing, blown away.

Sony owes Martin and Steve BIG. There's no way they were compensated to the degree they deserve on this. I suspect this alone will move some cameras.

With Sony's infamous and highly criticized video-look/sharpness, I'm somewhat convinced that even shooting 2k internal with codec or 2k RAW external on the F5 will more than adequate for my needs. Aren't the majority of films printed from 2k derived from 4k anyway?

A truly amazing piece. None of the motion issues with the Mahout piece. So I agree now that what we were seeing there were some instances of 360 shutter.

Pretty impressive!

Of course we can never be sure at which light levels they were working/lighting, but images are very clean, although not clinical. Even the ones in supposed street lights.

There are lots of details, what seems to be a great dynamic range and motion is great.

Was worth downloading.

thx 4 making me aware of this! downloading now

edit: great range, color and detail in the images. I liked everything except the beach scene, I dunno what happened there.

That was a great short, regardless of camera. The editing was perfect for it too. I think it will do an amazing job for Sony.

Is there any background information about how the camera was on the shoot? I think it would be very valuable to hear from Martin and Steve how they feel about the usage of the camera and the workflow they used. The credits suggest a behind the scenes team, so perhaps that's available somewhere too?

cheers

Wellp, F55s the first SONY camera that I am dying to shoot on.

Not even sure what to call this look, but it's on its own. Very distinct and different kind of "stock". The motion is SUPER clean, but not exactly hyper-video like every other Sony camera. NOT one hundred percent about color (yes, of course it was graded I know) but everything else...

THat daylight stuff was almost too surreal, what a freakin' incredible look to have for a fantasy or sci-fi. Damn.

Thanks for posting this Nate, brilliant work.
This piece blows away everything else I've seen shot with the F55 so far, no question.
I got totally lost in the storytelling and forgot that I was watching it to check out the camera's performance......but this is what we are all trying to do isn't it, regardless of what gear we use to shoot with?
I've a feeling that they could have shot this on VHS and still have made it look good enough to carry the audience's interest in the story. Really fine DoP work, performance, conception and direction. I loved the lack of dialogue.
Oh yes, the camera.......Obviously it did magnificently. Presumably the film was well graded before it was posted to view, but it definitely shows how well this camera will perform when used by real film makers.

Just downloaded the 1080p version and threw it up on the 50" and watched it up close.

TREMENDOUS amount of detail. I spend a bit of time comparing it to other test footage I have from the F35 which throws out VERY detailed 1080p images, and the down-converted F55 material is noticeably more detailed: eyes, hairs, pores, fabrics, grains of sand, the edges of leaves - you can definitely see the added resolution in the 1080p image; individual frames that aren't blurred by motion genuinely look like still photographs.

So it's got Red-like detail, but with more forgiving highlight handling.

A thoroughly convincing performance I reckon.

Hella crazy! I downloaded this and played though my MBPr hdmi out to my 73in DLP and this camera is incredible! Also, I think the piece was a perfect showcase or test of a cameras abilities. There is so many lighting situations going on in this short. BUT MAN, the detail!!!! This camera is going to do very well.

Hey guys, thanks for all the kind comments. Still out in Poland with somewhat patchy Internet but Steve and I are flying back to the UK later today so we'll be around more after the weekend. Steve isn't the greatest when it comes to forums but I'll get him to come on here and talk about lighting at some point. We've shot a load of BTS material which I'm going to start putting together next week. Be a couple of weeks before that becomes available I'd say.

Just a small note, we graded this on a projector for DCP output so there may be a few inconsistencies in gamma but not enough that I'd redo it.

Cheers

Martin
