Martial Arts Instructional Video with a Twist

Hello! My first post...

So the story is... a martial arts instructor approaches a friend of mine to entertain the idea of making a basic instructional video. My friend figures... "If I'm going to put time and energy into an instructional video... I want it to be different." What they ended up doing was creating a short drama/martial arts story where all the "moves" are taught in the instructional video. The video can also be used to see how a fight scene is composed. They just put an ad in a martial arts magazine this week hoping to sell a few copies. I figured I'd do my part and post up some of the trailers for the video. In fact, you guys are probably some of the first ones to check out the trailers on their website:

By the way, he used a DVX100A... and used all natural (or available) lighting except for the night club scene

Damn, that guy was crazy!

Great editing though man... It's hard to edit that fast, yet still be able to see everything the guy is doing, but I think you did it real well. Flows with the music and the action.

Nice! This is different indeed! Not boring at all. I would love to use my kung-fu but once they pull out a gun on me then my kung-fu ass is running home.

Great stuff man!

Welcome to the group Waemon, that video looks amazing. Nice editing, nice fighting, and to think that you teach those moves. Very innovative! I think Illl have to pick up a copy.

I wish I could tell you "thank you" for your compliments, but then I'd be a fraud. The video was directed by my friend Vincent Lee, who actually has experience working with action/fight choreography teams in a couple Jet Li films. The martial artist is Master Wang-Lijun, who trained in Shaolin Kungfun at the age of 8, among other styles of martial arts. The editor... I'm not sure what his name is but I'll find out.

I'll let them know you liked it though... they'll be happy to hear their hard work is appreciated.

Thanks for clarifying on the director, but don't discredit yourself... The editing is one of the strongest parts, in my opinion.
Has a good flow to it.

I just saw the clips, and ..WOW. Very innovative. I used to take karate here in charlotte a few years back, I remember watching those instructions videos because we had to learn alot of techniques for our belt testing. The videos were... you know instructional. If I see this dvd somewhere, I'll definetly pick it up, I want to know kung-fu!!! I will like to incorporate it into my movie making, because our choregraphy really... sucks.

Just talked to the director Vincent Lee, and he's really appreciative of all your responses. Also, the editor for the DVD is Ken Ohara. If you've played Jet Li's PS2 game, he edited the "behind the scenes" for the game. As for the trailers/teaser, Vincent Lee actually edited all of those.

If anyone knows of any forums/blogs where you can spread the word of these videos (or already have)... a big THANK YOU to you all. Seriously.

You guys/gals are great!

I really liked the part where the guy gets flipped into the air by his leg. On the dancefloor. flips like a hundred different ways and lands in in a crouch.

Wow this is great. Very different in a good way. Im a shaolin student myself. Think i may buy this to show to some of the other students at the temple. Great stuff.
