Marshall vs smallhd

hey guys-- trying to figure out which monitor to buy, the marshall 7inch hdmi (which I love because I could get it and use it right NOW) or the smallhd 5 inch which comes out in July.

People are excited about the smallhd because it has superior pixel quality (720 vs 480) but here's what confuses me---- I've heard that the 7D and other SLRs don't have an HD out stream anywise, and that they only play out at 480pixels regardless. So...that begs the question---are the extra pixels on the smallhd going to waste. will it or does it even matter?

any help would be much appreciated. im willing to wait if the smallhd is really that much better. but is it?

the7d and ds4 (?) kick out 720 or more, the 5d does not

imo (and I pull focus myself from the monitor) the extra pixels are crucial

I've been debating Marshall vs. SmallHD ever since I saw them both at NAB. On the one hand, SmallHD has the pixels. On the other hand, Marshall has what I consider "pro" monitor features like peaking and false color.

Of course there's a chance that SmallHD could "add" these features to their monitors through a firmware upgrade. (Who knows whether or not they will.) But Marshall can't add more pixels to their monitor. So in the end, you pays your money and takes your chances. :D

peaking..

My opinion is that peaking is not that reliable for a camera that can put the eyelashes in focus and still miss the eye

false colour

my opinion that the 5d has a RGB histogram , and the 7 can create an rgb histo from a preview still

One annoyance with my current smallHDs is the power must be 12v which can create battery issues if you want 10 hours away from power

thanks guys. good to know. my main concern is pulling focus so it sounds like smallhd is the way to go for me.
morgan-- how did you already get yours? ive heard theres a serious wait right now

I have the big ones DP1 and DP1X, dont have the lil one

the lil one has a higher pixel density and smaller size - should be more physically appropriate while providing the same focus feedback

I think the Marshall's peaking and false color functions are key for on the fly focusing and exposure confirmation. It may be great to have an abundance of pixels, but it is less accurate in the field, especially when everything is moving, including the camera.

I debated between the two brands for a while. I shoot with a 5D2 so the DOF is insane. If I didn't have the assistance of peaking, I would be in trouble trying to follow focus. But, to each their own. Hopefully, which ever way you go, it will work for you. For the most part, you cant really go wrong with either.

Okay, this is probably the fifth time I've asked this question and I still haven't gotten even close to a response.

I know smallHD and Marshall are great, but does anyone have an opinion on the 7" Manhattan LCD? 1024x600 resolution isn't bad. Its close to 720p and its on a nice sized screen. Not to mention its only $600. Any pros? Any cons? Comparisons? Anything?!

I am seriously considering the new SmallHD when it comes out. Whenever I'm using the 7D, I never do anything on the fly except focus - so pixels are a big deal to me. Other monitors have pretty high tech functions that I honestly don't need with a light meter (which I always use) and I'm pretty confident in my ability to judge focus from an HD monitor without peaking or any other type of focus assist.

I agree with the Leprechaun.....no one seems to know much about the Manhattans! Their 9" which is the same size as the DP1 for all intents and purposes is the same resolution (actually a few more pixels), around the same price and has more pro features for calibration, freeze frame for colour matching between shots and their 7" is 1024x600 but without as many features. Neither have false colour. They look a bit bulky though.

I've heard the peaking on the Marshall is very aggressive - does it really do the job - what about faces?

We need a shootout!

I dont know the marshall model numbers but the 720 one is (afaik) $3k (3x the price of a smallHD in the UK) - its a great monitor - it has the res of the smallHD and the 'pro video features'

Maybe currency variations or a greedy dealer put that off my radar - it was the best monitor I tested - just too costly in the UK

The marshall I dont like is similar in price to the smallHD - its the 480p one

--

On peaking that 480p marshall was when I tested it with a 135, not peaking at all on the face and peaking on trade stand logos behind - even though the face was in and the signs out (of focus)

Fresh DV has a marshall interview some where the rep from marshall uses the phrase 'kind of in focus' - an acceptable statement with an EX1 but not with a DSLR

Price seems to have dropped

The model was Marshall VLCD70XP HDMI $849.99

Morgan Moore, dig what u r saying , but a 135mm lens is like that in general not much breathing room! But you made me check the peaking thing and it only displays in b/w and red are the edges in focus, that means it focuses on the edges. Cheers mate for making me check, Did you pull focus on the 135 and see the red (peaking) change to a different focal point, Cheers
