Mark II or Mark III for video?

Its been shown over and over again, the mk3 has far superior video control over the mk2, As far as video quality, the mk3 is better in low light. Other than that, I haven't been able to see any real world difference when it comes to DR, or sharpness. Many re-sharpen in post anyways.

I'll triple that. I rented the miii alot and just bought a used mii cause it's all I could afford and needed a ff for an ongoing job. The markiii is way better with iso and aliasing/moire. I'll be selling the mii when I can to upgrade. Although I'm not thrilled with the button placement, especially the 'zoom' button which they moved from the right side under your thumb to the awkward left side of camera. My only complaint.

You can reprogramme the SET button to ZOOM on the 5DMK3. No complaint needed:laugh:

I know someone here who will argue to death that the 2 is better. :D

But really, the 3 is much better designed as a video camera and the image is great. I love mine to bits.

Wo nice. Do you need magic lantern to do this or can you do this with the camera as is?

It's a default feature. Just go into the menus (it should be in the last few sub menus) and there should be an option for 'custom controls'. Click on that and it'll bring you to a page where you can select the 'set' button and choose 'zoom in'.

By april the mk iii will win hands down. 4:2:2 on hdmi out in full scale will become very useful. If you've tried grading hard you'll know that 4:2:0 from the mk ii will fall apart fast.

Im planning on doing a Samurai test with the mk iii once the firmeware had been rolled out.

Oh man, you'll be so surprised when the images grade pretty much the same.

Actually... they wont. You can push 4:2:2 a bit further if needed.

Exactly. This was originally shot to ProRes 422 HQ (the finished video is a second round of shooting to help even out the script cuts). That was a bit much for this type of video, so the second time I shot in AVCHD. It was a bit more difficult to grade it, mostly in pulling out specific tones and colors (such as tweaking the skin tone...it was much easier to isolate in the ProRes version than the AVCHD).

Do you already have a Samurai? Because you'll have to do HDMI->SDI conversion to use the Samurai with the MK3.

Have the Samurai.... and the Cineroid EVF 4RVW which will pasd the signal. If I find time I might try and shoot myself in the foot and do a comparisonwith my Sony FS100 as well. My guess is that it will look more or less the same.... but still what you gain in color you lose in sound.

First it was "fall apart fast", now it's just "a bit further".

The difference between 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 is only in the chroma resolution. Biggest difference comes from bitrate as the Prores version will keep the shadows and noise intact better. But it's not night and day. It's more like... dusk and...other ... dusk.

but still significant if you wanna play around with skin tones. And greenscreen will do better with the extra color info compared to avchd.

I hear the 5d mkIII freezes a lot for video and there has been a lot of complaints of video being lost as well after hitting the 30mins mark. Hopefully canon fixes this problem because I film weddings and would love to use this camera to film.

No problems with my 5d3 so far. 30mins is the limit. Just stop/restart. Simple.
