Mariah Cary

Please don't laugh or snicker, but we were thinking of using Mariah Carey in a cameo for our film. The reason is we love the song HERO and think that would ideal for the soundtrack. She would only be needed for 3-4 days. We could offer $7,000 plus a percentage of sales from the soundtrack. She sells and is not totally a forgotten name. Other names that came to consideration Christina Ricci and Hillary Duff.

IMHO it's likely that licensing fees for using "Hero" alone would be upwards of $50-100K, and possibly way, way higher. Carey is still a very big star, infinitely far from "not totally forgotten". Try it and see...

Stranger things have happened, it never hurts to ask (much). You'd stand a far better (ghost of a ) chance if you can bring her participation time down to a few hours (minutes - did I say hours) at a time & town where she's all ready there & probably bored. . .

You might want to review Prodigi's and Taormina's excellent threads on working with agents & name talent.

Good Luck - love to see you pull it off

Ted is correct. The song licensing will cost you more than Mariah Carey's acting services and you don't "get" the song just for hiring her as an actor.

It might not even be her decision entirely either.

I think you might be able to snag any of those actors for that rate if they LOVE the material and their schedule is open, but I doubt you'll be able to use Mariah Carey's "Hero" on the soundtrack.

You might want to consult a music rights person and see if there are options in terms of covers etc. that you may be able to afford.

For $7000 I know you can get "Deborah" Gibson, Chyna (the former wrestler), maybe Vivica Fox (if her schedule is open) and a few others for that rate.

The DEBBIE GIBSON...man sign me up :)

I actually was a fan of hers when I was younger and recently my old tapes and CDs were part of a set on my current feature and an actor chastised my taste as the Debbie Gibson album stuck out amid all the classic Hip-Hop records etc.

So the next time he came to set we had "Out of the Blue" ready to go on the stereo and blasted it upon his arrival to set...so it's now his official theme song on the set.

Don't mess with the producer.

But, seriously Nate, that's good information to know...I'm going to keep that in mind.

I doubt you can her that cheap as others have said. And after "Precious" releases her stock is going up if it has not already. She is supposed to be amazing in that.

I clicked and it was worth every minute. Loenzo Lamas can't be stopped! And Gibson's still a looker.

Sure if you can get past her mom's crazy demands. Her mom use to manage her, I don't know if she still does, but last I heard her agent was going to give have a sit down with her about it so you may be in for a ride. Her agent was also Chyna's agent at the time. How valid is any of this info in 2009, who knows. IMDB pro will probably have any current data. If you can spot Gibson $7000 you may be able to get her for a day or two. I'd start with a low offer + travel and board, before I start throwing the $7000 figure around. Either way, if you're in films with Lorenzo Lamas, you actually actually doing pretty good. Lamas is one of the B movie kings.

Debbie Gibson??? Wasn't she a pop princess of the 80's but has been out of the scene since then.Besides how old is she now. In the film she looked kind of still young but I'm guessing somewhere in her 30's by now. Would distributors even know who she is. I saw her amazingly in a film on the sci-fi channel one of those monster films giant shark vs octopus something. This is a youth genre type film so I was aiming towards younger actresses, what about one of the Olsten twins, or that girl from SMALLVILLE Kristen Kreuk.

You do know how old Mariah Carey is, right?

Anyway good luck with your project.

Yeah but she looks good for her age thou. There is a scene in our film in which the heroines are invited to pop concert and meet their idol .Their idol gives them an encouraging peep talk about hope and courage. It's quite an effective and crucial scene that is the turning point in the film.

Another thing to consider. Mariah Carey is likely not wanting to play herself in a small film, or someone like herself. She did play herself for comedic effect in Don't Mess with the Zohan...but if you take notice of her acting choices they have been decidedly different from her own persona since her early days of Glitter.

Also, Mariah Carey is the same age as Debbie Gibson...but she does look good for her age :) (which is to say that she looks good PERIOD...as she's my age).

Now, Debbie Gibson on the other hand might be more inclined to portray a popular singer as she may have an incentive to be viewed as an Iconic Pop Star again, since that's not her current day job and she could be eyeing a comeback.
