[FS: General] Marantz PMD661 (Oade-Modified) PLUS Extras!

Stephen Mick

Totally Usable
I've decided to move to a Sound Devices recorder, so my Marantz PMD661 needs a new home. Here are the details on the PMD661 from the Marantz site…

  • Digital recording at 44.1/48/96 kHz sample rate at 16 or 24-bit quantization
  • Uses stable, reliable SD or SDHC memory cards
  • WAV (Broadcast WAV File) or MP3 recording format
  • Large, easy-to-read OLED display
  • Ergonomic, one-touch transport controls
  • Two XLR inputs, mic/line switchable with +48V phantom power
  • S/PDIF digital input, plus a spare 1/8” stereo line in
  • RCA stereo line level outputs
  • USB 2.0 port for easy file transfer
  • ¼-inch headphone jack with volume control

And some info on the "Super" Mod…

The Marantz PMD 661 Super MOD upgrade rebuilds the XLR inputs using very high speed, very low noise and super low distortion op amps that dramatically improve low level detail and clarity. Input PCB capacitors are also upgraded. Super low THD+N op amps allow for a very wide SFDR even with signal levels down 50dB. This preserves the signal quality of the highest grade microphones when recording soft signals, like voice, un amplified music, nature sounds and FX.

Along with the PMD661, I'm also including a form-fitted Marantz carrying case (never used) AND a Think Tank Multimedia "Big Audio" case. The Marantz 4GB SDHC card that came with the recorder is also included.

Price: $575 (includes Paypal fees and shipping to anywhere in the CONUS).

Hmmm :)

What did you use this for mostly?
I'm assuming that, on set, I'll only need 2 inputs at most (although assumptions are bad).
How does this recorder handle on its own (without a mixer)?
Battery life?

I'm quite interested in this :)

Used mostly for dialogue/interview recording both with a mixer (SD 302) and direct-connect phantom powered microphones (Rode NTG-3 and AT4073) as well as wireless lav (Sennheiser G3). The recorder is easy to use, the sound is great and battery life is excellent, powered by 4 AA batteries.

You don't have it listed, and I wouldn't use them much, but the 661 does have two internal mics, yes?
And I'm assuming this has the AC adapter and shoulder strap?

I should know by the end of the day if this is what I'm going with. I'm just nervous about getting my first recorder :)

Yes, it does have two internal mics, and they certainly don't suck. But I generally only use them for "rough" voice-over recording when I need something quick.

And everything that came in the box with the PMD661 is included, which means the strap, the AC adapter and the rest of the kit. Also included is the Think Tank bag as noted above, and the Marantz accessory carrying case (never used).
