Manually adjusting white balance

On my next show the director wants to do coloured looks in camera (DVX100 or HVX200 we're not sure yet), which is awesome for me because I love in camera looks.

My question is how can you change the white balance in the camera manually? I heard there was a way to do it in the menus or something. White balancing to faded jeans or something wont be precise enough to give me the looks that I need... I really want to be able to tell the camera what temperature to shoot at.

Thanks!

In the scene file, adjust the "color temp" setting. The smaller the value, the lower the color temp (warm). The higher the value, the higher the color temp (cool).

The "color phase" setting shifts the hue overall.

I wouldn't recommend white balancing on something colored in addition to using these settings though. Pick one of the two.

make sure that you are on correct white balance mode.
before you do that.
on auto white balance, you cant do manual abjustment.

be careful, if you mess up with the scene file settings, you will have to remember the settings have been altered. also you will have to save it otherwise you will lose it when switching off the camera.

personally i would use a different technique: i would white balance on colored cards rather than white. this will give you consistency and it takes very little. you will white balance on slightly blue cards for warm effects and orange cards for cold looks. experiment, and possibly bring a set of colored cards (sort what they have in paint shops or home depot in the wall painting section) if you can get ahold of that.

Thanks all of you for your responses. I will look at those settings next time I'm with the DVX.

Are the scene files the same ones that save the presets on the switch on the side? If so, are there just the two of them? So when I create one with my own settings I'll be wiping the preset that's there? In that case I would probably just write down the originals and overwrite them, right?

Thanks again.

If I was looking for warm cards could I just get a barely bluish white paint sample from home depot or something for way less?

Yes you could, in fact you could print a range of blues on your computer and do a manual white balance until you acheived the look you want... as in the right colour.
