Manual Iris setting?

Ok about manual iris. Is setting it just a subjective decision based upon what looks best in the viewfinder or on a studio monitor?

Is that all there is to it or is there a more technical way to arrive at proper iris adjustment?

I would appreciate any feedback regarding this subject.

A production monitor is always best. And a lot of D.P.s including myself like to expose to the middle range about f/4 - f/5.6 depending of course on how much light you have available. A good book would be John Jackman's " Lighting for Digital Video & Television" 8)

And in using Manual you will not have jumps in flucuation like you would with AUTO.

And also the more important question...at times...of deciding between a deeper or shallower depth of field, by controling the amount of light....through finding the right balance between the Iris opening, use of NDfilters and gain..and distance from the subject.
