Manual Focus

I was trying to use manual focus for the first time. But it kept auto focusing even when I turned the switch to auto. Then I read in the manual that you must turn the AF to off, or it will still auto focus no matter what... But if you turn it OFF then it will not auto focus regardles of the switch setting, unless you hit the auto button. So I dont get this. What is the purpose of having this selector switch if it really does nothng??

It doesn't do nothing!! You have to understand it.

Full time manual is when the "FOCUS switch" is set to M (Manual).

In this position, if you want a temporary autofocus without having to put the switch to auto, you can push the "PUSH AUTO button" (not the switch).

If you want the full time autofocus, you have to put the "FOCUS switch" to A (Auto).

Also, you have AUTO/MANUAL switch just beside the audio control knobs. If the switch is set to Auto instead of Manual, you'll go in Auto mode. The auto mode can be customized in the setting menu / AUTO SW screen.

I guess I am still confused. The switch by the audio is for Iris..what does that have to do with focus M or A ?

Not the iris button, the Auto/Manual button...number 18 from the manual....

In the menu you can set this button to automize (real word?) whatever you want....

Later,

Yes...when I turn that #18 like your pic shows to manual..a message pops up on the lcd screen "Maunal Iris". So what does that have to do with focus???

Thanks

Hey Skilled, maybe you chose your name too soon!
Hahahahaha! I'm kidding bro!
Seriously - these cameras have made me feel like an IDIOT many times!!!
They really are complex - but that's what professional is.
It's why film directors and other pros usually have camera ops on set with them.
I have had to make little cards like cheat-sheets that I refer to before every shoot to make sure I REEEALLY get everything set right and don't blow the shot.
Hell, I blew a shot just 2 weeks ago! Had ONE setting set wrong...DOH!
Double DOH!
When you take all the time to really learn every function and setting YOU CAN CONQUER THE WORLD with these cameras.
Hey - here's a great example:

Will DeRosa did this on a standard def DVX100 with no 35mm adapter, a couple of hardware store worklights, and he did all the color and look settings IN THE CAMERA, not in post.
He says the budget was $5, and that was probably for beer.

What's your ring selector on?

What's your ring selector on?

Make sure that your ring selector is on focus, otherwise it will be changing your iris, which you probably have on Auto, therefor causing nothing to work.

Skilled,

I originally had the same problem when I tried the Manual focus.
I found that there are actually two steps.

1. move the #18 "AUTO/MANUAL" switch to Manual
2. move the #8 "Focus" switch to manual. It is spring loaded, so just push it down and let it go.

You should now be in manual focus. In this mode you can still use the #9 "PUSH AUTO" switch to temporarily auto focus.

Good Luck,

Doug
