Manual focus - strange sound (scratching)

Me again ... :undecided

Today I was filming about 15 minutes of tape. I mostly do manual focus.
When I was filming the first tape, I used the manual focus as well and whenever turning the focus ring, it was nice and smooth.
Today, it sometimes makes a little scratching sound and feels like ... hard to describe ... a little bit "scratchy".

 My cam is only 4 days old. :embarasse
Has anybody experienced this kind of thing before?

Either it is in Auto or you have some funk (dirt, sand, debris) in there. Perhaps some compressed air or simly 'working it in' wil do the trick.

Not in auto. Checked on that a million times.

It does not feel or sound like dirt or something alike.

It's not there all the time, just sometimes.
If it was dirt, wouldn't it be there all the time, or at least
mostly?

Sounds and feels like ... uh ...

... take a cheap, small rc car. Turn the wheels when the power is off
so you will actually turn the electrical motor and the plastic gears
by turning the wheels.
What you'll feel and hear might be close to what I'm experiencing.
Very hard to describe...

I'll see whether it gets worse.

Just a thought: Maybe I was simply operating it too fast?

Oli.S,

The way the manual focus works is with a photo sensor and a bunch of really fine "teeth" on the focus ring. When you turn the ring, the photo sensor gets a pulse that it relays to the appropriate circuit. My point is if the "teeth" could be rubbing, that will give you that "gear" feeling (if I'm interpreting you description properly).

Just a thought.

Best regards,

Andrew Hoffman

Thanks for that info Andrew.
Yes, the feel and sound of it could be plastik teeth rubbing.

I'll keep an eye (and an ear) on it.

best regards,
Oli

does the Chrosziel DV Studio Rig work in conjunction with the century optics manual focus ring or does the Chrosziel DV Studio Rig work alone?
