Manual Focus issues

Has anyone else had this problem with the HMC40... I have the switch on camera set to Manual, my ring is set to focus. I zoom in, focus on subject, zoom out, and the camera starts to automatically re-focus on an image in the background, leaving my main subjects slightly out of focus. What gives?

Just because your cam is in manual mode doesn't mean you have disabled auto focus. In the viewfinder, does it read MFXX or AFXX? For manual focus, the VF will read MFXX. When manually focusing, why aren't you using focus assist? It would be a leap of faith to think that focus would remain perfect after zooming in and out to any large extent. Your aperture setting, which effects your depth of field, is a additional consideration.

AF-MF is toggled by a physical button on the front left of the camera, just below the "3MOS" label.

Grant,
I would expect that, especially in a enclosed lense system. The backfocus issue is normally on a camera with changeable lense.

You can test this with a backfocus card.

The classic method for focusing is zoom in, focus and zoom out.

If you have the time, this is the one I am most comfortable with.

Tommy,

I haven't tested this on the HMC40, so I can't say for sure either way. Your method is correct for manual lenses, but newer cams offer more (not always better) options. The point of my comment is that there is a focus aid that does much the same thing without moving the lens. As much as I like the HMC, the quality of the VF and LCD is not the best, so for me, using the focus aid is probably the best option regardless. You can also use it while shooting. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks Grant,
I have the HMC-151, and in poor light I find the focus assist not much good, and I use the zoom method to focus.

You should use the best method that works for you.

Tommygun,

Interesting you should feel that way. In low lite, on both my HMC40 and HPX170, I depend on the focus assist even more, but especially the HMC40.

On the HMC150, does your focus assist magnify the image and give you a focus bar at the same time?

Grant ,
I have the focus assist to magnify the image which is not to bad. I find the focus graph useless in low light.

If I was fiming dancing at a wedding after the lights go down, I would focus at 2 meters and keep what I am filming at that distance.
