Manual controls for 5D II video, hack initiative

Just wanted to say that we are coming up to around 2000USD which is very impressive!

Taking a quick look at the site looks as if so far you have only $176, I think most people (donators and hackers alike) would probably think that this is going nowhere with such a small sum and read no further.
What makes me say that ?

The 'pledge sum $2040' is almost perfectly camouflaged against the background image, squint your eyes even a little and it disappears !

I read your post (above) saying you are coming up to $2000 - so I went to have a look, seeing as it said $176, I was going to post here on dvxuser and correct you, saying you that you must mean $200 and not $2000 ! I simply could not see anything that indicated $2000 - maybe my eyes are not great, or maybe my monitor is not great, or not calibrated, or gets too much glare off the sunlight, but the 'pledge sum $2040' is really easy to miss as it is so perfectly hidden against the image !

Valid criticism ?

P.S. pledged $200 - more that willing to pay that for any decent move on 25p (or 24p) + some manual control.

Wow, I wonder if the sum could actually become bigger than the amount Canon is missing for not doing that themselves... :/

But keep it up! If they are not willing....

You too !!

damn I had a few reports of that (pledge sum in the middle)
on all my browsers it's nicely on one line each (all to the left).
I'll see what I can do.

Well I put them all in a table now so now they should be forced right! Let me know if anything is off.

Sorry about that but I tested in like 4 browsers, had friends try it and everyone got it right... but I got two-three reports.

Anyways. Let me know if it looks wrong !

Well personally I would be just as happy if canon fixed it. But since that is unlikely to say the least we really have to show them what consumers want and that if they can't give it to us we will fix it ourselves.

Maybe as a sign of protest (at Canon's deliberate hobbling of the video mode) you should call the project 'Canon-Fix' rather than 'Canon-Hack' ? :crybaby:

Anyway, the layout is much more legible now !!

You look a bit squashed up on the left, here is a more roomy image if you are interested:

Dammit, why can't there by a d90 initiative! Humph!!

Because I don't want 30p on my d90:Drogar-Smoke(DBG):....and is not like 5d it doesn't have jello

I will pledge $50.00 to keep`on rolling the wheels.

Because for 1 Canon 5D, you can buy 3 Nikon d90's to take apart and experiment with for the firmware. Thus having a higher bitrate would put it kind of onpar with the canon too. Having manual controls will solve so many problems like grain and scrolling waves/50hz shutter problems aah!

I think having 24p on 5d and starstep fix on d90 is OK, but last on priorities because they can be solved with alot of post...

Nikon initiative :crybaby:

not likely. have you ever zoomed into the live view? looks almost as bad as the compressed result. i mean i like the look and everything but anywhere close to the clean 5d results it is not.

The bottom line is that with a better sampling/compression algorithm and full manual controls the d90 could be a killer camera while we await the next step in movie modes on dSLRs over the next year. I look at my d90 body as a small part of the lenses and system that I am starting to build around it.

When I step up to a newer body in a year or so all of the other gear comes with me. I would rather have spent $860 on a body (current price that I bought the d90 at) now, and another $860 for a much improved body in a year or so than $2500 for a still very compromised Canon body now.

Nikon has no reason to hold back in firmware upgrades and improved bodies--they have no high end video business to worry about. Canon on the other hand has to worry about hurting it's high end video sales.

I would certainly contribute $ to a user done firmware hack, but I am hoping that Nikon will do it for us.

But yeah I've noticed that zooming in does create some weird blurry dancing grain and gives it this warm gauze, like cheap late 80s film stock. I don't notice it on web or SD so much, but I wish at 720p that dancing grain looked sharp rather than blurry. I doubt it's a sensor limitation because photos at 5fps look gorgeous. So it must be some software problem when converting the sensor for liveview, so potentially fixable with better firmware?

you already got the answer. notice how the number "5" you mention is significantly lower than "24"? that's it, simple as that. it's definitely a sensor limitation, as well as a processor and bandwidth limitation. they've cut a lot of corners in every step to make this work at all, sampling only some of the pixel, processing with fast and memory efficient algorithms and so on, same with the 5d, and while these issues will probably be fixed in new models they're *not* something a firmware hack can necessarily take care of.

so the bottom line is that if the d90 was a great camera it would be a great camera? fair enough i guess. :-) my bottom line is that the compression is actually quite good, it's the source material that's limited. take some clean source footage and compress it using mjpeg and the same quantization table and/or quality setting and you'll see how clean it looks. i'm talking about the reason behind the lousy source footage above.

Excellent!
It looked that way here from start, not sure why some browser mess it up :-\

Thank you for the pic, I swapped so that is up there now!

It is a little bit of work just keeping this one up so don't look at me :-)
But it would be great if someone started a D90 one. We need to show all big camera companies that we aren't satisfied. And actions do speak louder than words

Im hoping for the same with canon this is a way to push them to do it. But as you say canon is afraid to kill it's other divisions... politics.

But it would be awesome if Nikon kicked canons ass back to the stoneage in video. Simply showing them this is how to do it. That way Canon would have to release everything as well so all in all progress would be made.

Oh almost forgot. Canon fix. I thought of that but decided against it for some reason I now forgot. Probably because the domain was taken (which it is).
