Manual audio + AGC = ???

Today is my day for n00b questions.

So other cameras I have used have a setting that switches between "manual audio" and "auto gain control" - i.e. these are alternative settings for recording audio.

But the HMC40 can be set to Manual and AGC simultaneously.

The manual is yet again somewhat cryptic about these settings. Am I correct in understanding that setting to 'manual' gives control of the overall recording level, on top of which activating ACG will let the camera step in to prevent clipping? So that AGC on this camera acts as a limiter rather than an overall gain control?

There is no AGC on the HMC40, just a limiter. If the input is too strong, it's limited.

Now the user can adjust the input level, OR leave it at a fixed setting. Put the Panasonic XLR adapter in place and the level is always fixed. In that case, the user would need to adjust the setting through the Panasonic XLR Adapter controls.

By the way, you may want to purchase Barry's Book on the HMC40, it gives you all sorts of information on the camera...

Actually, I see now Panasonic calls it ALC (auto level control) not AGC, so I guess that's the clue that it's not a gain control. They should simply call it a limiter.
