manual aperture ring fEE error?

okay, regardless of whether i'm in movie or picture mode, whenever i unlock the aperture ring and try to twist it manually to manipulate aperture, it won't let me do anything and says fEE. what is up? the lens is a new nikon AF NIKKOR 35mm 1:2d. i mean surely, it will allow me to twist the aperture ring if i wish, why else would it even be there and allow me to unlock it if not? i don't like using aperture with the plastic wheels, i'd like to use the normal aperture ring. yes, even if i am in all manual mode. any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

As long as you unlock it after entering live view you can still film even with the error message being displayed--just ignore it. You must enter live view with the F-stop on auto--otherwise live view will not activate.

Personally I have not seen a reason to adjust F-stops manually--I set the stop I want before entering live view, then enter live view, get the exposure I choose by exposing for a brighter area, and begin filming.

thank you. but lets just say i'm walking around town taking still pictures and i want to keep the camera on manual and adjust the aperture by twisting it manually, then take a pic when i'm where i want to be, can i do that? basucally, im wondering if i can adjust the aperture with the ring not the wheel? thanks

yeah, you just need to cover the contacts on the lens with some tape...electrical tape would work...or you just slightly loosen the lens so it doesn't click and then you have a full manual lens
