Manfrotto 701HDV, can I use it with my tripod?

Seems OK, please try if you can unscrew the existing head from the tripod to some thing that look like this main_cat_collections_290series_tripods.jpg Than you will be fine.
 
If the 500AH's performance is anything like the MVH502A/AH (rough plate installation/removal, play in the panning head when set with minimal resistance), you'd be better off with a used 701HDV.

i really don't see how the 701hdv could be better than the 502. I have the 701 and I like it just fine. Its light weight, fairly accurate, and a good price. That being said, it lacks pan and tilt drag controls that the 502 has.

I am just speculating because i have never used the 502 but I would be really surprised to find it poorer than the much lighter, cheaper and smaller 701.

I have however played with the new 500AH model and i really like it. The new plate drop in mechanism is super smooth. It still works with your old 501p plates but rather than sliding in and out of the back they slot in at a 45 degree angle and then lock down. This way if you have a rig that drops below the plate in front or behind it (like a shoulder rig or follow focus) you won't have to remove these details before attaching to the tripod. It does also have a tilt drag adjustment that the 701 lacks.

and again yes the 701 and the 500ah would fit on your tripod. The 502 would not because it comes with a 75mm bowl, which is a different mounting style.
 
Except for the head that use the bow type, your tripod can fit any flat base type head

you might only need to but a heavier weight to hold the tripod down if the head is too big.

The drag control pn the 502ah is a more flexible while 500 have only fixed drag.

I have recently put the MH055M8-Q5 in my watch list but is a bit expensive. I always think the 502 is not light and I do both photo and video on the same day and I am on foot so do not want to carry 2 heads.
 
You are right.( I guess you have successfully un-screwing the head off your 294?). Usually your bag will do for weight, but really depend what you are standing on( stable or vibrating floor, heavier if unstable or windy)
 
I found that my 701 didn't lock pan tightly. I wrote to a Manfrotto parts supplier about this and they responded by saying they're all like that. If you take it apart, you'll see the design is not a recipe for longevity. I've sold everything Manfrotto except a CF tripod. After experimenting with cheap Chinese knockoffs, I've found that, although cosmetically inferior, mechanically, they're often the same in performance. Obviously resale value is nonexistent.

Thanks! On this project I want to use it mainly indoors on the floor of the house. I have to find a place where they already have the new 500AH head, because I would rather buy that than the older 701hdv (it's only about 20usd more, so why not?).
