Manfrotto 504HD on flat base tripod

Am I correct in saying that you can use the Manfrotto 504HD fluid head on a flat base photo tripod like a Gitzo, with the use of the Manfrotto 325N adapter? Anyone have experience with this setup?
 
Yes that's the compromise until a proper video tripod can be purchased I guess. Have still read mixed reviews about that head, people seem to either love it or hate it.
 
The 504 is kind of ok, sort of. Your getting what you are paying for. No ringing endorsement except that is much less expensive than the top quality brands.

I know. It's just something until I can afford a proper setup. I don't know if it's worth it however. One, I need something that can handle a 500 f/4. The lens has a replacement arca-swiss tripod foot (which I do not want to be constantly swapping and changing). To have this Manfrotto head work I'd need the 325N adapter, plus another adapter/clamp from arca-swiss to the manfrotto quick release, which doesn't even seem to exist.
This adds another $200 to it at least.. hardly worth it.
Is there anything I could get under $1000 that would be suitable for this lens? Tripod and head I mean. I assume I'd have the same quick release compatibility issues if I was using any other video head brand too.
