HPX250: Making a P2 "Library" and the story of how I got nowhere.

Try Lightworks if you are on a PC. It will eventually be cross platform for Mac and Unix too. Supports P2 MXF format for read and write and has extensive media management tools.
$60/yr for the pro license that supports all major pro camera codecs, though some are read only.

Oh thats interesting. I was sure the 1/2" sensors of the PMW 200 were a winner over the HPX250´s 1/3". A lot of people in my circles are exited about this new Sony and dont like the HPX. Regarding your media management, @ 300 a pop that solution sounds worth a try. Never heard of it though. I would simply back up the P2 folders separately anyway. Rule is 3x, so get a lot of drives and service them regularly since the grease can get dry.

Hi Tim
back-up is not the issue here. We, like a lot of other P2 users are desperately trying to manage our footage. Unlike XDcam files that can be seperated individually, P2 files can't. This means building a searchable, easy to navigate for an editor etc etc etc is impossible.... (unless we find a software that can do it)
Thanks..

Going to see a demo of CatDV today. Anyone got a specific question they need to be answered?

Thats great! yeah, if you can ask if their product can make a P2 clip into a single clip, so that single clips can be extracted and put in a folder of your own choice. For now, you can only deal with entire cards and all clips on that card, which is very painful.

Had a demo of CatDV and was very impressed. I am not over conversant or interested in high falutin software, I just want a job done. My brief is to be able to view files from various mainly MXF sources, SxS UDF, EX1 BPAVs,P2 and Nanoflash and log them and be able to find them and send them to Avid 6.5 for an edit. CatDV can do this easily and by tagging various parameters that can make life very easy. P2 files can be re-designated into other catalogues without physically moving original files. I am looking at how to select material for an edit and send metadata to Avid for re-linking for the edit. Can make offline Proxies for general viewing without having to dig out original library HDDs. The program is used widely in the USA and BBC Natural History/Sport and News are now using it. It is well worth a look as it is not expensive. Have come away from the demo to develop a "Schemer" a dozen or so tags that will be able to identify specific shots of a particular type from any source material. The idea of being able to monetise a specialist library by making it easy to access by anyone is appealing.

Just found this CatDV presentation in Hollywood.
