"Make Your Own Damn Movie"
by Lloyd Kaufman
published by St. Martins Griffin (www.stmartins.com)
My copy purchased at Borders Books ($14.95 soft cover).
This is an exceptionally humorous book. I have never been entertained and educated with such style and talent. Be aware though, there is much colorful language and many overtly sexual comments.
As a guide to making independent films, it brings you on a behind the scenes peak into one of the most twisted minds in independent film. A sweeping, soup-to-nuts guide to the trials and tribulations of funding, directing, producing and marketing independent films, told with autobiographical grit and wit.
Sprinkled throughout the book are short chapters written by several people who have worked in the trenches with Lloyd over the years. These are generally done in the style of an opposing view to something Lloyd had just written. There is even an ongoing argument between Lloyd and one of his production assistants regarding film vs digital. In fact, several arguments and old grudges get aired publicly between the actual meat of the chapers. Oddly enough, the meat is just as funny as the humorous inserts. These are seriously clever people.
Lloyd Kaufman is the driving force behand Troma Films which has made such block-busters as "The Toxic Avenger", "Cannibal! The Musical" and Kevin Costner in "Sizzle Beach U.S.A."
To quote from the back cover of the book:
"So whether you want to learn how to make movies or learn how Lloyd convinces actors and actresses to get naked for little or no money, this book is for you!"
If you have a bit of an attitude and can appreciate huge dollops of toilet humor and sexual innuendo - this book gets two thumbs up. Highly recommended.
