What are some kewl ways to make my XL2 footage looks like film...AS MANY IDEAS AS POSSIBLE!!! PLEASE and THANK YOU!! I use Final Cut Studio

i'm still trying to make my watercolors look like oil...

seriously two different mediums, but you can produce like film...lighting, camera setups, shots, etc. to me the most important thing you can do is light properly it will make a world of difference.

What do u mean DVX footage? I have an Xl2...im sorry...how would putting a clip about another clip help the colors and make it look like film...would really appreciate it if u could tell me. Thanks

you can't, its video footage therefore it looks like video. when you shoot on film then thats when you get a film effect.

Yeah, It meant take some DVX footage put it over your XL2 footage (hiding it) and render. The render will show the DVX footage and have the look you want.
It was a joke.

The DVX looks like digital video as well, not like film. It's definitely closer to 16mm looking footage than the XL2, but not enough to fool the professional eye. I have both(DVX100B used to have an A) and there isn't this big earth shattering difference I keep hearing about. Out of the box? Heck, yes. The DVX beats the XL2 by a decent margin.
As a matter of fact when I first got the camera I was ready to take it back I thought the image was so inferior to the DVX. Then I started learning the camera and tweaking. ..suffice to say, they'll have to pry this camera, along with my DVX, out of my cold, dead hands to get it from me.
Get someone who intimately knows the XL2's image controls and you will get a look that is breathing right down the DVX's back and with a very noticeably cleaner , higher rez' , native 16:9 image.
Someone made an intersting statement though about lack of this type of XL2 footage being available. I have no comment on that other than to say I'm simply too lazy to put it up. But then, I'm too lazy to put up my DVX footage for that mattter. :crybaby:
And, yeah...best for the poster to go over to the XL2 section.
After I'm done singing the praises of my DVX, I will go over there and sing the praises of my XL2.

Gotta love how literally things are taken here. :D Dimple, I'd follow what others have said. Good lighting will make the biggest difference. If you're talking strictly about post processes then I'd do some color correction/grading for better clarity in your footage. But most of it comes in shooting. Proper exposure, white balance, lighting, composition.

apply the "flicker filter" found in effects>video filters>video. Add colour corrector, (not 3 band) desaturate it, boost blacks and whites. lastly, grab some noise, put it on top and drop the opacity right down, like 5 or 10%. should work, I made some PD-150 footage look pretty damn slick.

some people add an really small amount of grain
bleach bypass filters and saturation have been the most useful to me in terms of getting look that is more filmic (though slightly vintage) but not an over the top look like a "The Matrix" type filter

Because Macig Bullet sucks:nads:

Seriously, well lit XL2 footage can look pretty damn filmic to the average viewer. But if you need your already shot footage to look more filmic, definitely color correct it until you get the look.:)

1. Good lighting actually is the key.
2. Then shoot as wide open as possible. Don't push it more than 3-4.
3. DOF is always the key.
4.DO NOT USE ZOOM untill can't do without situation.
5. Spend on a good(Very good actually) tripod. Try premium range of manfrotto with good fluid head and it should cost you around half the price of DVXb.
6. Expose scenes with lighting in layers, foreground, background, key-points and highlights.
7.Make yourself a steadicam if possible( you can get the referance from www.homebuiltstabalizers.com
8.For DVX 100B ( I have the same cam, it's really cool), try following settings:

F5 / 25P / Detail level : -4

V Detail : 0
Detail coring : -2
Chroma Level : -7
C.Phase : +7
Color temp. : -4
Master ped : -12
A.Iris Level : -2
Cinelike (V is optional, I go for V when there's only diffuse light and not much hot colors)
Knee : Auto
Matrix : Cine-like
Skin : Off
V Detail Freq : Thick.

I got these settings from DVX users forume, thanks to the guy and sorry I forgot his name. Theses settings seem to work

BUT

Video is video and film is Film, You can't compare them. Try to get soft focus( Idon't know how), and a lil' bluish tint with FCP. Anyways, I should stop writing now as this is my first post at forume and I am afraid it could BACKFIRE ;-).
