Major strobing after avid export

Alright I've got a problem that baffles me so I would really appreciate some help from the 24p pros. I'm going to explain each step I took and what happened after each one.

I shot on the DVX100a using 24p advanced mode and I captured it in Avid HD at 23.976 fps with the 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown. After I cut it up I did a video mixdown and exported it as an Animation file with Millions colors plus. When I view the quicktime animation file on my computer it looks like it's already interlaced. I then authored the the project in DVD Studio pro. When I watch the dvd on a tv during any shots with movement there is a really appartemnet jittery look that is not the normal 24p strobey film look.

I'm really in a bind here and I would really appreciate any suggestions you guys have.

There is a bug that when exporting from DV based codecs (25, 50, 100) for all projects types and frame rates, there is an interlace compounding issue that occurs. Progressive sources become interlaced and interlace sources become ultra interlaced. It is on the list to be fixed.

The workaround is to transcode export to a non DV codec like JFIF, but Xpress Pro and 24fps does not offer a good enough resolution to do so.

I will check into this to see when and what version this will be fixed.

I just tried this on Adrenaline 2.2.1 and did not see interlacing issue. Are you on Xpress Pro 5.2.1 or later?

You know, I just rendered my film and noticed a strobing effect too. I'm not sure it's the same one we're talking about. It looks more like after each frame the previous frame to that one was inserted, so the object appears to be moving forwards and backwards all the time.

It only appears on the shot to which I applied the "trim to fill" effect. The project is 30i DV. It looks fine in Avid in real time and after rendering the effect within Avid but not in the final render. I have rendered to another MOV file with the Avid DV codec though, not to a reference file.

Right now I'm using Avid Xpress 4.6 on an AMD based machine and I don't believe the strobing appeared when I used the trim to fill effect earlier on on other projects.

Trim to fit uses a motion effect to make up for the time. Depending on the type of motion effect, it will appear as more strobey since the basic motion effect is frame blending. If you are using 24p within a 30i project, you will also pick up 2:3 cadence in addition to the frame blending compounding the strobing effect.
