MAJOR Flash Card issue!!!

I have been using ULTRA II flash cards and MxM adaptors for a year without any problem. Now for the first time I have run into one.

With one of the flash cards I can watch all the footage, and I can copy half of it to my hard drive. The other half simply won't copy. When I try to copy either throught the Sony software or directly from file to file, it stops the copying procedure about 1/3 of the way through and gives me an error message. What is very odd is that the file is intact on the Flash card since I can view it directly from the Flash card.

Does anybody know what might be going on and how I can retrieve the footage to my hard drive? Thank you.

I don't know which OS you're using, but have you tried dragging and dropping a copy onto your hard drive with something like explorer and reading from there. My thought was if it was due to a bad sector putting onto a new drive might help.

If that works then I'd scan the card for bad sectors. Your computer can mark bad sectors, then reformat in the camera.

I use XP. I tried copying the file to two different hard drives. It's always the same result. I think the problem comes from the Flash Card. Is there another way to rtetrieve the video from the flash card?

Try this if you have not done so already:

  1. Go to My Computer
  2. Right click the card's icon
  3. Go to Properties
  4. Click the Tools tab
  5. Under Error-checking click Check Now
  6. Check BOTH boxes for Automatic Fix System Errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

If that does not work you may need to take the card to a data recovery place.
If you can see the video, it's still there so all is not lost.

Also try a different card reader if you have one. Don't know why, but sometimes different readers can be finicky with different cards. Even if they have worked in the past.

It happened to me one time before ...
Use the Sony Clip Browser to watch the clip (on the flash card), you will see where the problem exist (if you can watch the whole clip without problem then this won't help).

You can mark up from start of the clip (IN) to the frame before it's stopped (OUT) then save to a new clip.

Mark (IN) point couple frames after the problem frames and OUT point at the end of the clip and save to other new clip.

It should allow you to copy to the hard disk with the new clips

Best of lucks
