Maintenance on a Mac...

Are there ways to maintain a Mac like there are with PCs? Is there something like the disk defragmenter, of other tools that I should run periodically? Thanks.

Don't really need it if you know all the terminal commands (yeah, right!) this puts them all right there in a nice interface.

Here's the only thing I do:

Repair Permissions any time I load an app (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility)
and
Cocktail once a month
and
Blow the dust out of my machine once a month too

That's it. No more degragging... I do keep disk warrior updated for the just-in-cases... but I've NEVER used it.

Really? I use disk warrior about once a year, and it ALWAYS finds a bunch of stuff disk utility missed. Twice now, disk utility said something was wrong with a disk, couldn't be repaired, and I popped in disk warrior to fix the problem. After running disk warrior I have an obsession to repair permissions again, and everything's smooth.

When I bought a Mac, I still had a lot of PC habits, and "maintenance" was one of them. I went through a ton of apps which purported to do "maintenance" on a Mac. Not only free ones, but also paid ones, including very respected stuff like iDefrag, DiskWarrior etc, etc. After all this time, I can honestly say: you don't need them, and actually you are BETTER off not using them. In particular iDefrag really messed up my system and actually killed a hard drive in my iBook - and at no point did I observe any benefit from using iDefrag or any other "maintenance" software.

If you read the relevant information, you'll find that OS X does not need defragging - or even more accurately, any marginal improvement defragging *might* give you, is not possible with any defrag software out there. There is in fact no benefit to defraggin under OS X.

Most of these (such as f.ex. Onyx) do stuff that you could easily do yourself, but the apps take up room and are invasive on your system.

OS X does not really need "maintenance". At most, you should repair permissions after every system update and software installation (which you can easily do from Disk Utility), and that's about it.

Save your $, save your time, and most importantly save your system - avoid all the junky "maintenance" software. That's my experience, FWIW, YMMV, IMHO.

Repeat after me: Mac is not a PC.

You don't need to defrag with the HFS+ file system. There are tools that allow it, and maybe its not a bad idea every couple years. But its not necessary to do that, or run any other maintenance software either. Repair permissions is about it... and even that really isn't neccessary unless you run into a problem.

If Applejack ever gets updated to work with Leopard, get it. It's helped me a ton in the past. I'll have to try Cocktail and see how it is. I agree with not really needing to defrag your drives. But clearing out caches and repairing other funky stuff that just seems to mysteriously happen can be a good thing. Applejack always perked up my system if I hadn't run it for a while.
