Magnet "Flip"

What are the cons of using a magnet on the viewfinder in order to flip display correctly while using a M2 35mm for example??

just stick a magnet next to a TV and see what it does...granted depends on how powerful the magnet is, but in my own experience i would not stick a magnet near the camera. i do know magnets and tapes are a bad thing...

yeah thats what i thought, but i cant believe anyone would even consider recommending this technique on a several thousand dollar camera.

I use the magnet trick and it works just fine. The magnet is very very weak. It works perfectly and it saved me from buying an external monitor. It does nothing to actually mess with the LCD screen itself, it triggers the sensor that flips the LCD when you go into selfshoot mode.

I've also done this many times with no adverse results. Like wmiller said, all it does is trick the screen to flip the image. If you're really worried about it then buy an external monitor. But it's most likely not going to hurt your camera. MANY people do this trick.

isn't there already a magnet in the dvx that flips the lcd when you flip it? isn't that why the magnet trick works? seems logical and if so obviously a magnet will not hurt it. i use the magnet trick and no problems...

Really? Wow. Do you just place the magnet on the very outside of the lcd screen, as far away from the actual camera device as possible??

you place it on the inside edge on the bottom half. you have to turn it the right way for it to flip. if the right and left are still swapped you have to go into the menu and turn mirror mode off. this makes the image turn the right way. the display (yimecode, etc) will be upside down but still easier than trying to frame shots upside down...

So you say "weak magnet"......how weak? Like a small fridge magnet? I really do like using a monitor for serious work, but there are times when I'm fine with not setting up the monitor and I've even gotten used to the image being flipped, but if it just means putting on a little magnet, that would be ok. I tried a while back to get the image to flip with a magnet but I couldn't get it to work.

Use a very small "rare earth" magent, about the diameter of a pencil eraser. I bought 80 of them recently for something like $15. "Neodynium" is another name for them. If you're good, you can actually get it to stick onto the side of th LCD screen near he thinge whle flipping the image simultaneously, but worse case just use some gaf tape to keep it there.

I used a small rare earth magnet about the size of a pencil eraser as well on my DVX 100B. I have tried several times with no luck. Anybody ever have any luck with the 100B?

Yes.

try fliping the magnet over or rotating it. the polarity must be correct.

I've rotated it, flipped it, spun it, seen pictures of how to do it, read paragraphs about proper placement, tried different small rare earth magnets.... nothing.

Show of hands... who has been able to do this with the 100B?

now i did say it depends on how powerful the magnet was...now i'm confused though because OP said viewfinder and then everyone else started talking about the LCD.

there's no way I know of to flip the viewfinder

I had some perfect mags and eventually lost them -- the were a little smaller than a pencil eraser in diameter and the thickness of a coin.

Lately I've been using fidge magnets (size of a quarter and thick as 3 or 4) but I smash them with a hammer and just find a shard.

If you are having problems make sure you are placing the magnet between the LCD screen and the camera on the plane that's flat against the camera on teh lcd, not angled, so that's pretty far back towards the hinge, but in the middle of that little area.

If the LCD on the B works in self shoot you should be able to flip it wiath a magnet. I don't think you can turn self shoot off (only switch it from Normal to Mirror) but who knows on the B maybe you can toggle it on or off ...

To test that theory, point the camera at yoursefl and flip the lcd over facing you, if you see yourself right side up in the LCD then you should be able to flip it with a magnet.

If you see yoursefl upside down then you will never flip it with a magnet
unless mabe you change a display setting.

Once its flipped make sure you have self shoot set to normal vs. mirror (or vice versa can't remember ) or the left right will flip too when you put the magnet on, making a new disorienting problem.

Thanks JDS, but still nothing.

I need to start getting more sleep.... the place that I remembered reading that other people had problems flipping the B was in a thread that I started. Wow, I think I'll go bump that one and then go to bed. I will let you know if I ever get it. I have some front surface mirrors on the way, so for now I will do the ol' mirror to the lcd gig.

The magnet trick only works for the older dvx cameras.

Posted a couple of weeks ago in the DIY forum. Don't know if it's true or not but I do know that I was never able to get the trick to work on my B

This being said magnets still are a bad thing around tapes in general not to mention fragile minidv's. I am in the same boat trying to save on an external however there are many pros to an external monitor over lcd to add to pile of "why not to put a magnet there".
Keep in mind lcd also stands for lying cheating display.

I would not use rare earth magnets though, they are way too powerful.

That said, I went to ace hardware and got some crafting magnets. With a small piece of scotch tape it, works just fine. I was using it handheld for 5-6 hours and it never fell off once.
