MAGIX Acquires Sony's Vegas Pro

"MAGIX Software, German developer of media production software such as Fastcut, Music Maker and Xara Photo & Graphic Designer, today announced its acquisition of the majority of products in the Sony Creative Software portfolio. These include Vegas Pro, Movie Studio, Sound Forge Pro and ACID Pro. Sony Creative Software will continue to develop their recently introduced Catalyst Browse, Edit and Prepare post-production software."

Good for Vegas! I used to love that editor, switched to FCP 7 ten years ago (not many places hire Vegas NLE editors) so maybe this company will try to get it out in front of customers better. It would also be nice to get an OSX version.... I miss Vegas but I don't miss running Windows.

I guess this answers the question about what Sony was going to do with 2 editors, hopefully this will be good for Vegas users.

Glad they aren't dumping Vegas. I just bought Catalyst not long ago also have Sound Forge and Acid Pro. I'd like to see the competition step up and offer serious alternatives to Adobe's rental fiasco.

Obviously I won't have to worry about switching over to another NLE, having settled comfortably into Vegas since Pro v.8. They also say they have no intention of going the way of the subscription scheme. Also, they are committing to take on user feedback and see what they can do to get requested features implemented. Win. Win. Win.

I wonder what the motivation of Magix was to do this. The products they bought seem to overlap considerably with what they already offer. Maybe they want to expand their customer base with vegas users. However, maintaining two different product suites will be hard to do cost effectively unless they rip one apart and try to share as much code as possible between the two while giving them a differently styled layout and different branding to prevent alienating the original user base.

I like the broad functionality and overall usability of the Magix NLE but each version seems to have at least one bug which can drive me crazy. I hope the vegas users will not experience a sudden drop in quality in future versions as the (expanded) team of Magix developers are becoming acquainted with the product (I'm assuming magix didn't buy an entire business department with staff included). It would not be the first time that a software company buys the product of another company and after a while the users of the bought product abandon ship.

Catalyst now is subscription only.

Catalyst now is subscription only.

Adobe posted record profits for it's last quarter because of the subscription model, and this occurred despite losing half their user base since they went to the subscription model.

Personally I think Sony should have waited until the Catalyst suite was rock-solid before switching to the subscription model. Nobody wants to pay a monthly subscription fee for software that still has a long way to go in development.

Could be that's what they did. Magix is a holding company with around 20 subsidiaries and it's what they've done in the past. They also seem to be into developing a hybrid type subscription policy with their Xara products - purchase, free ongoing upgrades for that year, then an optional annual new release to maintain access to updates and extras.
I'm hoping they combine their product suites, keep the features and lose the bugs from both.
