Magic Lantern UPDATE

"After two days of hacking on the 2.0.4 firmware with IDA Pro and patchdiff2, I have Magic Lantern booting and running on 2.0.4. Hopefully I'll be able to declare a stable release sometime soon (like later this week after more testing).

The new features in 0.1.8 are (besides 2.0.4 firmware support) autobooting, waveforms, spot-meter and USB control (via PTP). There isn't really that much new code, so hopefully it won't take too long to decide that the stability is unchanged from the previous release. The ML audio control doesn't interoperate with Canon's, so you have to use the ML menu and config file to set the gains. 1080i HDMI continues to be problematic and there is no estimate for when/if it will be functional."

what does this "The ML audio control doesn't interoperate with Canon's, so you have to use the ML menu and config file to set the gains." mean?

I believe it means that if you have ML loaded on your camera, you need to use its gain settings for the audio, rather than the ones included in Canon's own MENU/firmware.

I haven't used ML as of yet, since I was coming from the 7D, but I can tell you for sure that I am indeed excited.

I just ran some tests with the magic lantern 0.1.8 alpha on 2.0.4. The good news is it didn't brick my camera. Everything that I used in the old version appears to work ok- cropmarks, manual audio levels, zebras. It froze once switching between screens but the old version did that too.

Can we download it now, or is it a select release?

It's not a public release yet....but you can download it at your own risk. It sounds like there might be a public beta in a few days.

Ok I'll hang on then, and wait for it.

Also whats the use for custom crop marks. I.E: why would I want them, and better yet can you explain how they can be used?

Thanks squig

I have 2.35:1 cropmarks so I can frame for cropping to 1920 x 816 in post. Then I can cut my 16x9 footage with my anamorphic footage.

2:35 :1 - doesn't sound right . are you normalizing a squeezed anamorphic image from an anamorphic lens?

Yeah. I'm mixing anamorphic footage with 16x9 footage so I use the cropmarks to frame the 16x9 footage in camera for later cropping in post to match it up with the 2.35:1 anamorphic footage.
