Magic Lantern unlocks 3x crop mode on 5D3

Just unbelievable!!! Canon company looks two ways now: 1. Stupid. 2. Greedy.
I so dreamed about to record 3x mode fullscreen!

That's really great thanks. I just added a 600D as a b cam to my 60D just for the 3X crop that Canon has since removed from newer models. I guess it's back.
What is the rate of storage consumption shooting in 1080 raw at 24fps?

30 secs is about 2gb... So around 8 min for a 32gb card and double that on a 64gb card which seems to be the best option.

Thank god thunderbolt raids are getting cheap this year.

Why not at 2x mode too!?!

Come to think of it it may be possible to have a lossless variable electronic zoom using this method by just varying the size of the focal plane!

This is amazing stuff!

If 1:1 crop can be enabled for for 50p, The 5DmkIII will become my next camera. For shooting surfing, a 3x (or 4-5x, if it was in 720p) crop would be beneficial, but I also need the ability to shoot slow-mo. I'd love to be able to leave my Sigma 150-500mm at home when I'm traveling and have the 70-200 with me instead (currently I usually travel with both - lots of extra weight!).

I'm totally blown away by how fast this whole 5d RAW thing is coming along. Just a few weeks ago I was thinking I might need to start saving for a Scarlet or an FS700 & new set of lenses (BMCC isn't an option for me because it has no 50/60p). Now it looks like simply adding one more body to my current arsenal of Canon DSLR gear will open up a whole new level for me.

Because that's not pixel-for-pixel.

What you're asking about would involve scaling on the fly, from various resolutions, or point-sampling the chip at different points.

From what the video seemed to be saying, they're instead taking a true 1920x1080 sample from the center of the chip, same as the GH2's ETC mode. The 3x crop factor is based on the notion that the chip is 5760 pixels wide, and 5760x3 = 1920.

This 3x crop mode should still leave the sensor area about as big as Super16 film (36mm wide -> 12mm wide; Super16 is 12.4mm wide).

If I understand pixel bins correctly for video the FF chip point samples the chip at different locations. It seems ML has the ability to control things to this level by the recent 1:1 pixel to pixel developement.

If so then then the next logical step would be to vary bin distances to gain a variable zoom with eigenvalues of discrete rectangles of the chip used.

It's been my experience that 4GB is 48 seconds; 32GB is just over 6 minutes and 64GB will get you about 12 minutes and change. 1920x1080 @ 23.976, 5d3.

16mins for 64GB, that seems almost laughable.......

Way too expensive, they need to make some sort of compression factor for many people to even consider this an option professionally.

Much cheaper than 35mm or even 16mm film stock + processing. And, film stock is a one use only affiar.

Philip Bloom recently went back to shooting 35mm film stills and that is an honerable thing. The real mastery is shooting with economy rather than overshooting as has become common practice of late. Having these kinds of constraints doesn't make one worse, but rather better photographers and cinematographers.

Just so happy to have this technology in a 5Dmk3 body with no complaints at all.

Hardly. It makes them look like they're more concerned about producing cameras that are rock solid performers and not unproven beta releases. Canon could probably do a few more things that Magic Lantern hasn't even thought of yet, but if those things wouldn't be 100% stable, then Canon's not going to do them. They have more of a responsibility to making reliable products, which is fine. I'm just really glad that we have the Magic Lantern team doing the extra work to bring out these features for those of us willing to use them.

don't understand this kind of talk at all. what ML is doing is extraordinary and revolutionary. in less than a month, ML has given us full-frame raw, extending the capability of the camera, and full rez 3x crop, extending the capability of your lenses. the cost of a couple of high-end CF cards, less than the price of a gh3 body, opens up tremendous, and unique, possibilities. and even if memory costs were the most prominent aspect of the hack for you, which i can understand, the cost of high-speed CF looks cheap next to P2 and SxS.

First and last of al this is NOT Film so stop it.......

Many people shooting weddings, events, Music Videos etc. with their Dslrs. This Raw workflow is nothing amazing I have seen, heck and that's from working with Red Epic where files are compressed.
Magic Lantern and 5D raw doesn't impress me, I still much prefer the image of the BMCC and 60fps GH3.

Also to answer the poster above me, Dslr brought something innovative to this art form. The truth is this raw uncompressed workflow can simply not be used in many many applications. Let them get Pro Res working, then I might consider it.....

If you're shooting weddings and events and need a fast-paced workflow, RAW is probably not for you. It can still be made to work (shoot RAW, convert to CineForm RAW while you copy the files to your computer, edit in Premiere, export to Resolve and do your color and final render there), but I understand it if you just prefer to shoot H.264. It will be a lot softer and it will have a stop less of DR, but it's faster and easier.

RAW is definitely a bad idea for many applications. And heavenly awesome for other applications.

Don't even dream of ProRes, the part of the camera that ML can work with doesn't have the processing power for anything like that.

Why so many "....."? What is up with that?

No, this is not film. This is something way better.

BMCC is an aliasing mess. So is the GH3. I doubt you could learn to use RAW though. It does actually take some work. Work that some people just can't do.

The real beauty of a project like this is that if you don't like what you see (e.g. output file sizes) you are free to get in there and contribute your changes to make the world a better place.

Working with Raw 5k from Red Epic and BMCC I am more than sure I know and understand the workflow. Maybe speak for yourself, my resume speaks for Me and many projects I've done that will see the light soon. But no point in this being a what have I done contest. Just know that your post is 100% false and don't be so quick to defend a company that does not care about you.

Also if you think BMCC and GH3 have aliasing then you must not even own a Canon Dslr.....
peace

I really don't get why people get all indignant about what ML does on a Canon. Nobody is saying that it's the perfect solution for everything and the second coming of Jesus himself...it's just a really cool feature that we get for very little investment. Yeah, the workflow is a little bulky, but the results are really nice. Clean, sharp, more DR, more flexibility, so what's the problem? Afraid that people will question your investment in a BMCC? It's nothing personal so get over it. I can't see getting worked up against a hack for the GH3 or BMCC or freaking out at their owners for the crop factor on those cameras. Find the tool you like and enjoy it.
