Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

I've just made a bunch of testing on the 50D and I wouldn't consider it to be a good camera for raw video. The image is so far from how raw video is from the 5D3 and riddled with issues. Moire, aliasing and overall not that good image quality from the 50D. I'm sure you can tweak the footage to be bearable but to me I'm laying this project to rest.

Had plans to make a short video showing raw video from the 50D but it's just not good enough.

Yeah, I read that post on EOSHD saying it was the "best s35 dslr for raw", and immediately thought how silly that was because people would go out and waste money on that thing.

I almost became a fan of that site until that incredibly stupid post.

I think we should cut Andrew Reid some slack. Maybe he's gotten a little too enthusiastic, but it's not just him -- EOSHD's forum was down for upgrades needed to handle the volume of traffic regarding the Canon raw developments. Many, many people have been touting this as the next best thing to the Second Coming. So Andrew went a little overboard.

I agree 100%. I'll also add that I have a feeling we haven't seen the last from the 50d. So one user had a rough time with it. Let's wait and see how the next week shakes out; I have a feeling there will be some stunning images from this forgotten camera.

edit: for example, I'd love to see a test between the 5d3 stock H264 and the 50d raw... it's all relative.

I wonder why the 50d is even on the workbench. It does not have a video function. Seems like the ML team is quite small and anything other than the 5DmKIII is kind of wasted resources at this time. At least pick a camera that has video as one of its features.
Since the image quality of the RAW video is closer to the photo side of these cameras, all of the EOS DSLR line are going to have the possibility of nice video. In good lighting with good lenses it is tough to tell the difference between a T3i and a 5D in the still world. Processing power is going to be the limitiation and staying with recent releases has the best odds.

Right now the limiting factor is bus speed, and the CF port cameras have an advantage there. That's why the 50d is (as of this moment) recording double the pixels of the cameras with SD cards, and is just below the 5d 2 and 3 in res. Thus the excitement.

I did just that last night. 5D3 in H264 and raw vs 50D H264 and raw. Much can be masked by shallow dof but once you go wide and close the aperture all kind of nasty things starts to creep into 50D raw footage while the 5D3 is clear.

I have a 50D and 5D3 sitting on my desk. The 50D can shoot 1920x1080 at 30fps to H264 at about 41mb/s. No other framerate is possible in H264.
50D can also shoot raw video up to 1592x1062 if your card can shuffle data fast enough. I got reliable 1280x720 at 25fps working with a Sandisk 60MB/s card.

According to some 50D becomes a raw video monster with the ML software but I don't see it as such. It's cool yes but nothing like what the 5D3 does. It's noisier and less refined than the 5D3 and also can't do full HD.
Yes but in terms of resolvable detail I think when blown up it looks on par with the 5Dll especially in this comparison. The moire might be a little more (no pun intended) than the 5Dll but overall I think it looks "almost" as good.

I wonder if there is a filter made for a camera with this sensor size just like there is for the Mark ll?

Another nice feature of recording in Raw mode with the 5D mkII is that on my SWIT HD monitor, the resolution won't drop down to SD anymore when recording!
In fact there is now no delay or glitch.

The bug is, it hangs the camera if you try to view the footage with HDMI cable attached ( ERR 70 ) so if if want to view footy, remove the hdmi cable.

For now, the crop marks is not centered though and pushed to the left.

This would be good for focus pulling. Not for framing.

I'm still using may 29th build. A reminder that this is all subject to improvements every day.
