Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Well, I know pretty much every which way you can do raw in post workflow enviroment as I have been a ikonoskop user/shooter for the last year and months. AE/Lightroom and ACR will never cut it for much as they will leaving you hours and hours of time for things that shouldnt take much time at all. Do they look amazing? yes they do, but they are pipe dreams for actual video use. CDNG HAS to happen for ML to really get to that same level as ACR/AE for a proper workflow. Resolve/ CDNG is a powerful combo (looks and grades better than ANY other option out there) I have used all options too (speedgrade, cineform studio premium, premiere/GNR etc) I personally love my results with A-CAM CDNG and resolve- as good or better results than ACR. The only real option for 5d3 ML raw workflow right now is cineformRAW via cineform studio premium. Very easy simple way to go. This past weekend I used ML 5d3 for a shoot, we shot 7 hours on 1 5d3 w/ 4 32gb komputerbay cards, immediately converted to cineform raw and we were editing and grading in real time very shortly after. My only issue with cineform is that for reasons I do not know is that its harder to grade than CDNG. I just dont see the depth in color I see w/ CDNG and resolve or ACR. Its a trade off, but for those who want to use 5d3 ML right now THIS is a real workflow. BTW, the reason I wanted to shoot 5d3 ML for this particular shoot was I was shooting in near darkness with only a LCD projector as light. I must say what we accomplished shooting in near darkness at 3200 ISO ML raw was absolutely stunning. Its hard to believe that the MLsoftware is so usable in its infancy. For us, no dropped frames, no missing files, no camera crashes, no overheating, no artifacts. Once CDNG happens fro the 5d3 ML (fingers crossed) this camera will be very hard to overlook.

Agreed on R9/R10 workflow.

Will you be able to share any footage from the shoot?

Didn't think about Cineform, mostly because I've noticed the same thing as you... just doesn't look as nice for some reason.

It could be because CineForm "bakes" in the colour - David Newman has released a tool that will allow 5DMK3 RAW to be converted to CineForm without the colour baked in, see here:

http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5479.msg41378#msg41378

cineform raw is raw. the color is not baked in at all. it does a lossless compression of the image but keeps all of the raw metadata intact. the tool that david created does the same exact thing only removes the step of making the .dngs from the original ml raw. don't get me wrong, cineform raw is very good. I personally cannot get the same images from it that I can with CDNG and resolve.

Can anyone elaborate on why the 5d mark III seems so much sharper than the mark II when shooting raw. Its like night and day to me. it seems like the mark II is sharper in h264 but in raw mark III is clear winner.

I think this is due to 2 things. 1. Some samples, like mine, uses the VAF filter in front of the sensor. 2. And I think this is more likely, is the fact that the 5D2 cannot shoot full hd at 1920x1080 unlike the mkIII. Most samples are either 1880x720-ish or 1280x720 upscaled.

Oh ok. That makes a lot of sense. Do u think the Mark 2 will eventually be capable of 1929x1080 raw like the mark 3?

I'm not sure if they could eventually, they say the most they can pull from the sensor is 1880 x 1080. This is from an earlier build. The aspect ratio is funky so they fixed this with the latest build to give 16:9 which is a resolution of 1880 X 1058.
This is still quite a step up in quality compared to full HD H264.
In crop mode 5x you get a setting of "almost 16:9" at 1920 x 1078 or higher at 2048 x 1078 which gave me a 114 frames with a 1000x cf card.

the 5D3 softness in H.264 comes from the camera's debayering process (once you take that factor out and do the debayering in post, it's no longer soft)
that 1880 number comes from dividing the sensor's resolution by 3, so I doubt they'll be able to get it to 1920 (same with the 50D and its 1592x1062 maximum resolution)
and the fact that the 5D2 has a lot more aliasing/moire issues than the 5D3 tells me that it's doing a much sparser readout of the sensor: it's skipping lines, columns, I don't know what, but a lot of stuff, whereas the 5D3 seems to read only one line out of every 3, but it reads it completely and does a horizontal binning

Can you post a Resolve vs ACR detail comparison? Something like this (which is the reason we didn't use CineForm RAW for our recent BMC project): http://www.similaar.com/foto/blackmagic-workflow/index.html
(I can send you the DNG files from my test if you want, or you can use your own, but make sure there's fine detail and a sharp dark-bright edge)

the 5D3 softness in H.264 comes from the camera's debayering process (once you take that factor out and do the debayering in post, it's no longer soft)

Out of curiousity, can ML do that with h.264 footage, change the way it debayers in camera so it's not as soft?

The thread is long so sorry if this is already posted. List of Canon cams that can and cannot do Raw.

The 50D has been hacked. The people at Magic Lantern are wizards.

It was pretty miraculous to see the 50D emerge onto the HDRAW scene.
But as a 5DMkII user, I must admit to feeling a little neglected during all of this.
There's been so little info. on progress with the 5DmkII, understandably overshadowed by the MkIII, but now even the 50D is getting more buzz. I just hope there's a stable RAW hack for the MkII at some point this summer.

The 5D mkII nightly builds has been catching up. To update you on the May 29th build I'm testing now, here are a few of the tweaks.

1. Due to bickering which button to use for start/stop recording instead of the LV button which many agreed to be too out of the way, a.d. one of the compilers for ML gave 2 versions, Joystick press and AF-ON button. take your pick.
2. File manager module to see and delete files.
3. More than 4gig of recording. :)

already implemented on MKII

1. Audio record. (still not fully tested)
2. Crop modes. and proper framing in LV.

Thanks for the updates Ted.

that 50D hack is very interesting. hope to see more of these hacks on different cameras. 6D would be a good one
