Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

There are some happy owners in the amazon feedback section, and some scary stories too.

I'd be tempted to say "we'll know, soon enough", but...

I've had no-brand cards working perfectly for years. And I've had brand cards look as if they were constantly getting corruption, because the motherboard in my PC was dying and the USB ports induced data corruption. Unless somebody is buying 10 batches of 10 cards each from 10 different sources, then testing them all for reliability issues, well, we can't be sure.

Which leads me to...

Ok, yeah not everyone is up for things like this so thats fine dont buy them. Im just giving the board great first hand knowledge of the quality of the cards straight from a very believable person. I personally was very happy to know how they do it so I wanted to pass that along to people that have helped me over the years. Thats what it is. Kind of like hearing about the "smart money". Its a rare thing to speak to a inside person like this. BTW I have had cards fail from most all "big" companies in one way or another. ONly way to really safegaurd your days work and back up and check as you go. So dont just blindly put your faith in a "brand" name.

The Lexar 1000x cards have outperformed everything else in the ML benchmark tests. Sandisks fastest card came in second, followed by transcend and komputerbay. I've got a Toshiba 1066x card coming next week. Delkin have just announced 1050x card.

I can record 20 second 1920x720 bursts with a 600x Lexar and 12 seconds with a 60MB/s sandisk.

I have the Sandisk 32gb 90mb/s card and shooting 1920x720 still showed me some issues. But it could be that I loaded the wrong build. Regardless, you need a FAST card or cards if anything with a $'s contact is going to be shot with 5Draw.

Turn global draw off and make sure fps is set to 24. And turn off all the Canon menu crap. Yeah I wouldn't skimp on cards.

I have yet to drop a frame at full 1080 raw on ML with any of the 4 komputer bay 32GB cards I bought directly from them yesterday. the buffer indicator usually stays at the one star mark too. every so often it'll pop on the 2nd star.

Interesting fact I learned today that affects anyone currently buying 1000x cards at the moment for the ML raw hack. I set out this morning to buy Komputerbay cards via amazon. I wanted them overnight. After ordering I noticed they werent coming until wed. I canceled the order, then tried contacting Komputerbay directly. I noticed it was a 770- area code. 770 is my area code as well. Turns out they are 15 mins from me. I contacted them and picked up locally. I had a long talk with the senior manager and he told me the FULL truth about these cards. These cards have the IDENTICAL components as the LEXAR 1000x cards. He even went as far as slicing a few open to show me the identical micron chips inside same as LEXAR. He was very matter of fact about this info. He went on to tell me exactly how and why this was possible. He said the only difference was slight QC variance from Lexar. Keep on mind these cards come direct from Komputerbay with a 100 percent guarentee. Meaning that if you get a card that was missed in the QC variance then return and get a different one. Rest assured I am only a filmaker and not a CF card seller. Please take this information as a gift as I see it as VERY reliable having seen and heard with my own two eyes and ears.

Thanks for that. It would explain what I am seeing, so I believe you that they are QC failed parts.

Cinema5D and I both bought an identical 128GB KomputerBay 1000x.

Mine does 75MB/s and theirs does 85MB/s.

My other KomputerBay 1000x does 95MB/s!

Seems not all micron memory chips are created equally, so make sure you always have the option to return the card and swap for a new one within a few days if you get a dud.

Still great pricing though, and if you get a good one, they seem very reliable thus far.

Looks like someone either read my post or figured it out themselves... 12gb raw file has been made.....

Format you card as ExFat and wait for a nightly build of Magic Lantern & Raw2DNG with the updates for large file sizes.

ExFat doesn't have the 4GB limit that FAT does.

I have a 128 Komputer Bay card that that tops about 75 MB/s as well. I'm still happy with it for the price and can shoot 1920 x 840 raw for a nice 2.35:1, uninterrupted and with no frame drops, on the 5DIII. I've got a couple of 64GB versions coming early next week and we'll see what the performance is like with them.

I'm still happy with it, though - it works great in my C300 and will likely live in the 'slot B' as my dual record backup.

Update on 5d mk2 build using newer build.

Getting better, with raw record now triggered by LV button instead of from menu.

Audio recording with Raw now works in 5d2 with separate wav file. on NLE i noticed 4 frame delay in 30p. (move wav file back 4 frames to sync.)

in 24p there is 2 frame delay for the wav file. ( move it 2 frames to sync)

Its still quirky but getting better. :)

Got the 64GB version Sandisk 90mb/s and its working perfect for 1920*720@25fps. 1920*1080@24fps gives me drops after 750 frames or so

"The 5D Mark III is now top dog for video quality, far surpassing the GH2 and GH3. All this is rather tragic, because quite simply, Canon don’t deserve this success. It is entirely of Magic Lantern’s making, and they did it for us free."

Does Canon deserve the success? After all you couldn't even hack it if Canon didn't make it.

"...the sensor in the 5D Mark III is far more capable than the one in the Blackmagic Cinema Camera in many ways – generating clean moire free images especially in 1:1 crop mode and cleaner high ISO images from a much larger sensor. The BMCC is no longer as attractive to me."

I think the Blackmagic will remain a good value if it delivers solid 4k. Not everyone wants a "hacked" camera. And I think some consumers will find a lot of value in getting Resolve with the BMC.

Simple question : is there a possibility to shoot Raw 25p with a full hd resolution or is it locked to 24 P . I couldn't fin any answer.

Thank you
