Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

On my 1000x card anything up to 87MB/s is pretty reliable, no skipped frames.

Full 3.5K lasts about 2 seconds before the buffer fills up and the card can't keep up.

Dropping to a still very respectable 2560 x 720 at 24fps seems to work well, no buffer overflows.

The latitude seems similar to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. I'm amazed how much I can pull down an overexposed shot. It is a different world to what the camera did in H.264.
Interesting coincidence in 2012, we had 2.5K going with the BMCC... I guess 1DC had popped up before, so your finding makes sense.

Now I wonder about the 1DX hacked... for sure, 4K @ 1DX is possible as same as 2.5K @ 5DIII :)

Anyone have a guess - perhaps based on how ML works - when this will be realeased?

How long is a piece of string?

There's really no way to tell but the ML crew are working at a fever pitch and things are changing by the hour. There's still a lot of work to be done before a beta becomes available. Could be next week, could be next month, could be next year. It's like preordering a digital cinema camera.

At the rate this is going it will be soon! At least a new alpha will be out any time, then nightly builds will resume. The developers releasing a module for users to use will accelerate the developers knowledge on on which setting will work on what Card.

I now have the 5D2 double buffer module and due to my very slow and old card of only 133x I can only test around 6-7 seconds of 1280x720 raw video. But maaannn... its sharper than a 1080 h264 native mov. :)

133x, that's very sad.

I still can't open the files on my mac!

Sad indeed. :) But at least I am now testing the workflow with raw. By playing around with hight and width I can record more than 6 sec of 1880 by 720 raw video. Nice wide aspect look. The workflow is very easy with AE.
Also converting the xxxxxxxx.RAW to seq dngs is just drag and drop with the raw2dng converter provided by ML.
I'll order a faster card to get serious with this.

Also, for other readers, at last peak over at ML I think one of the developers have found a way to record audio already. Only on th 5D3 for now. He set to record sound to SD while raw video on CF. :)

Happy days ahead!

Owning a creative/production company with a few 5Ds, but no time in weekly production schedules for handling raw workflow...any thoughts on the increased quality being available in a wrapper for ingestion into, say FCPX?
Obviously in the future, but just wondering if this increase in IQ is only via raw.

I wouldn't be very optimistic about this.
* Applying something like MJPEG compression to a RAW image (in essence, a monochrome image in linear light and with a weird 2x2 block structure) is very inefficient and will create lots of artifacts if you push it hard enough so that the bitrate is somewhat low.
* The debayering method that the Digic processor can apply in real time is tuned for speed, and it leads to the soft image we all know from the H.264 video mode.
* To get an idea of the processing resources that the ML team has at their disposal, the old 2-seconds limit was a result of having to swap the byte order to meet the DNG spec: receiving 3F-18 and writing 18-3F was too demanding, and couldn't be done in real time; the buffer started to fill up, waiting for this processing to be done, and recording had to stop when it was full

I know almost nothing about programing. But I know a bit about filming. Could someone send me a compiled firmware so i could put it in a card and shoot some tests please?

mac, mac or pc?

I'm finally up and running, shooting some Iscorama 1280x720p stuff, will post a bit later.
