Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Because Andrew Reid, while having a very nice blog with updates, doesn't have enough technical background. He's suffered from foot-in-mouth disease before.

Yes that was a typo, well spotted. It is 14 bit uncompressed linear raw (RGGB). The origins of this branch of the Magic Lantern hack was a module sending YUV 422 uncompressed data to the card, hence the confusion.

Sony F65 is 16bit linear raw so not far off that. HA!

I was wondering about that, because I wouldn't call YUV422 "Raw" in any sense.

Ah, right. Thanks for clearing up the confusion.

Now even more buying options to consider.

The EOSHD article mentions 3592x1320 and 2880x1320 and 2560x1080 as options. Are those resolutions also at a full 24fps?

Yes, but at the present time the highest resolutions suffer from dropped frames. Stay tuned, all limitations are subject to sudden change.

I don't know much about this, but I think all of those higher-than-1920 options use a crop of the sensor, which is not centered, and which (at least in a previous build) is not shown in the LCD screen: you're flying blind, I don't know how anybody would be able to compose a shot with this

the big thing here is 1920x1080 or 1920x800 in 14-bit uncompressed RAW with nearly 12 stops of DR, for $5K if you include some nice CF cards

When we shot with an 5D MkIII it shut down because of heat at about 80 minutes of continuous recordng, this will run hotter. The hack will probably not be a great doc cam but a great narrative cam. Now enable some sound recording for easier synch.

I live in a climate where it is regularly over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. I have had cameras overheat and shut down within seconds, and in that kind of weather they don't cool down very quickly until you get somewhere cool.

Whether they do or do not decide to release BV1-MFT as an active mount, they've already said that it requires a redesign of the camera internals to make it active. It isn't just a matter of "make it active".
That's why I said, " . . . there has to be more to it than that, or else, because the pocket cam's undoubtedly been in development for months, BMD would've done that a while ago."

Wasn't responding to your post, it was aimed toward the one you responded to.

I will definitely keep an eye on the development of this. Let's not forget that along with a raw motion picture camera you're also getting a killer stills camera. For my money that sets it over the BMCC since I do both stills and video. Plus ML resides on the card not the camera firmware right? So if that's the case you can always pop in a another card to shoot h.264 when time and file size is an issue and raw quality is not.

Now the big question for me is, can the ML guys get raw working on less expensive Canons like the 6D, 7D, 60D and Rebel series?

I think the problem for some of the bodies would be the fact they don't use CF cards. Not sure, but the SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC cards have a read speed of 95MB/s and write speed of 90MB/s....is that fast enough?

Considering that at 3MB a frame x 24 frames per second = 72MB/s, it seems so at least in theory.

...I agree. The quality is amazing...and if ML can make this work on a $700 camera....then that will truly be a revolution.

$5k??? You must be buying lots of cf cards to getto that ammount
