Magic Bullet

I've been beta testing it for awhile, and bought it as soon as it came out.

I used to do the tedious process of cutting in vegas, then transferring it over to after effects just so I could use magic bullet looks. Thankfully I won't need to do that anymore.

MB is nice. MB Looks is excellent but as said, brings your CPU to its knees. With plain old MB, there isn't anything you cannot duplicate using Vegas' built in filters without some time. The good thing is for the extra few minutes you work getting the look you could potentially save yourself hours of rendering. MB Looks is a different animal, and should be looked at as a separate programs that just happens to run inside Vegas.

Magic Bullet is really nice inside Vegas for me. I can add it to a clip and hit the space bar and it plays almost real time. In premiere it barely played at all for some reason. And if you change the quality of the video preview to a little lower, it plays straight through without a pause.

Magic Bullet Looks 1.1 upgrade (for owners of Vegas 7 and 8)

Magic Bullet Looks 1.1 upgrade (for owners of Vegas 7 and 8)

Thought I'd share a nice little bit of news.

Seeing as the new Magic Bullets Looks 1.1 has now been released for Vegas I will mention that I was able to purchase it for the upgrade price of $99 from the Red Giant website.

My version of Vegas Video 7 came bundled with a light version of Magic Bullet Looks HD and after a pre-sales email with Dave Vieira at Red Giant he confirmed that this bundled version would qualify me for the low cost upgrade.

So anyone out there who had Vegas 7 with Looks HD and wants to upgrade to the new version (which is pretty damn nice btw) should be able to do the same I would think.

Guess this boils down to two things....Vegas rocks.....Red Giant rocks.

MB Editors vs MB Looks

MB Editors vs MB Looks

I have MB Editors Ver 1 and really like some of the presets, but the render times are crazy. Just downloaded the trial version of MB Looks and ran my own test (albeit very unscientific).

I rendered out a QT file from a :42 clip using the Buffalo preset in MB Editors which took 12 minutes . Replaced the plugin with the new MB Looks using the same preset (I do not know if Red Giant made any changes to the preset). The render took 16 minutes . The rendered files were the exact same size, so I don't suspect any major changes to the preset.

To my eye, I think the first rendered clip (the one on the left) looks better than the second.

The newer version of MB for Vegas (version 2 I think, and the latest one that has just been released last week) has got GPU acceleration, which lowers the render times dramatically if you have one of the certain video cards with the GPU function. Check out the Red Giant software which video cards with GPU are supported. I've got such a card and the render time is very acceptable thanks to this function.

Increase in Render Time

Increase in Render Time

This is the version I downloaded from Red Giant and it's Ver 1.

My system:
Nvidia Quadro FX 1500 video card (256 MB DDR3)
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.66 Ghz w/Intel D975XBX2
3 GB RAM - DDR2
Separate SATA drives for OS/Apps, Capture and Render
XP Pro SP2

Any other thoughts as to why I'm not seeing a reduction in render times?

Thanks!

My benchmark:

I did a render time test to see if there are any improvement in Magic Bullet Looks over Magic Bullet Editors in Sony Vegas 8 Pro. Using the Buffalo pre-set I rendered 10 seconds of wide-screen SD & HD footage.

My system:
Gigabyte GA-EP350-DS3
Intel Q6600 Quad Core
8Gb DDR2 800Mhz
2x 500GB 7200 RAID-0 (Source Drive)
500GB 7200 (Render Drive)
Nvidia 7600GT 256Mb
Vista Ultimate 64bit

My results:

Magic Bullet Editors v1.1
SD 10 Sec = 1min 45sec: CPU 30-40%
HD 10 Sec = 6min 9sec: CPU 30-40%

Magic Bullet Looks v1.1
SD 10 Sec = 35sec: CPU 45-55%
HD 10 Sec = 1min 56sec: CPU 45-55%

Conclusion:

It's clear from my results that the Magic Bullet Looks is at least 300% faster on my system. I was not able to explain the lower CPU usage in Editors over Looks. IMO the colours from "Looks" seems more accurate, "Editors" over-exposed while "Looks" did a great job at retaining detail and preventing over-exposure.

Over all Magic Bullet Looks is a great addition to the Red Giant series and GPU accelerations seems to work. The new interface works very well and the addition of RGB graphs is a life saver. I like it
