the original looks the best IMO but then again im not a huge fan of MBL. its really good software if you know how to get in there in a dial in a look without over doing it. the presets are over done and they basically scream hey look i just added a MBL filter. just my $.02

Thanks Matt, great feedback. It is a lot of fun to play with but you are right, a subtle look will be much more effective. I also like the original a lot, but I think the early evening look is pretty good too.

As matt said...

The second I saw the second and third clips you posted it just screamed MBL. The same presets are used so often over and over by everybody and it makes everybody's footage look exactly the same. I don't even think those presets look good either.. it looks like bad footage that was not white balanced to me.

Go for your own custom look. Be like the artist adding color to his canvas as he creates.

you can also get a lot of really different looks with in the camera itself. worth doing some experimentations with the scene files. i'm the in camera look fan for the most part and only doing minor tweaks in post if needed.

Tiffen also makes plugins for software of their glass filters, they usually render faster than MBL and look great...

I'm a huge fan of using curves either in Color or AE. FCP's 3 way is DECENT... mostly just for quick fixing of colors or contrast etc.
