Magazine Preference

Re: Magazine Preference

Wasn't the CGI dog thing in "Red Planet," not "Mission to Mars"?

Some of the worst, stick-out-like-a-sore-thumb CGI is in the "special editions" of the original "Star Wars" trilogy.

A portent of the suckitude to come, I guess.

Re: Magazine Preference

either way, Mission To Mars is still ranks as one of the absolutely stupidest movies I've seen in a long time... No offense if anyone had any part in the making of... unless you were the writer or director.... at which point you need to be publicly flogged. ;D

Re: Magazine Preference

LOL Yeah...

It sucked hard. In fact, all of the MARS movies have sucked. Why do they feel the need to instill it with bullshit ala 2001 or Close Encounters?

Jeez, just give me a kick ass mars mission film. But noooooooooooooo, they have to have higher meaning and aliens with mind reading and........................

Re: Magazine Preference

I'm a big fan of seamless CGI - where you can't tell anything has been done - like taking out television antennas for a period piece or expanding the colosseum in Gladiator - pretty good effects i think. Sometimes CGI needs to be noticeable because of the story line ala gollum. Where I first cursed CGI was the last bond film (parasailing down the "waves" that just looked stupid. Esp upsetting was the fact the Bonds were one of the last havens for great miniature work. I think certain things lend themselves to CGI and others to miniature - It's the bad decision making on the filmmakers part that makes both technologies look bad. (Star Wars anyone?)

Re: Magazine Preference

Exactly.

I talk alot about Black Hawk Down as I just plain love the film; but the effects done were done to "enhance reality" and that to is my favorite kind (where you cant really tell)

You know, I love BOND (who doesnt) but I have had some serious issues with the films nevertheless. Parasailing down the wave was ****ing he dumbest **** Ive seen and the opening with him surfing? What the **** was that? I know alot about spec ops and clandestine ops and that couldnt be farthest from how it would be done. IT was just plain stupid to make him a big wave surfer. And then the surfboard had weapons in it??!!

I think if you combined BOND with the seriousness of, say, The Bourne Identity it would be perfect.

Maybe its up to me to create a legitimatly kick ass spy hero.

Re: Magazine Preference

I liked certain parts of Goldeneye and Living Daylights - thought those were some of the better late generation bonds. I'll tell you where they need to fix stuff. GET RID OF AMERICAN WOMEN. Halle Berry? That girl from wild things? come on - Bond movies rocked because the have lesser known but incredible foreign (non us) women. I'll go see something like swordfish for that. Bourne Identity rocked because a) realness and grittiness of the film b) Franka Potente 'nuff said
that and black ops are just cool

Re: Magazine Preference

I totally agree.

I mean, I love Bond and with Pierce on board it brought a whole new level of cool to the franchise (Goldeneye did kick ass) I just want a BOnd with more plausibility.

The Wild Things girl is one of the worst Bond girls (actressess) ever to be on film.  Halle was cool but I like your take on the foriegn women.  Hell, give me the greek girls, brazillians, russians, italians.  YEah!

Re: Magazine Preference

I love the tangents these posts go on--we've veered from "favorite magazines" to "when to use CGI". I love it! :)

Re: Magazine Preference

Grab a copy of DV from a friend and fill out the free subscription card, then you've got a mag for free.

DV is technically much better than videosystems, I have both (free) so I know

Re: Magazine Preference

DV magazine. And Denise Richards as a scientist (or whatever she was) in that worst Bond movie was the most horrid casting I have ever seen!

Re: Magazine Preference

Since no one's mentioned it, I'll add RES to the list. More mainstream than it used to be, but still a good source for alternative media-type stuff. And, you get a pretty good DVD with every issue that contains shorts, music videos, audio, and trailers.

Re: Magazine Preference

ASC of course, DV second, and Film and Video in 3rd. I like Moviemaker as well, and sometimes I get Computer Video Maker lol.. they are the only ones where my projects have been mentioned :(

Re: Magazine Preference

Going back to all the Mars discussion (which I just now read, forgive me) but I'm a roboticist, with a troupe of thespian robots (see http://ullanta.com/ullanta) I've tried to get into films... but no film folks I attempted to contact were interested in actual, autonomous robots... wanted CGI or remote controlled ones at best... I keep planning my own robot-studded film, but since I've been doing audio/video production as my night job, I haven't had too much time for the thesbiots... but if any of you anti-CGI folks want to talk about the real thing, let me know and perhaps we can work something out...
