MadMark Films' L'EXPERT (2014)

Some behind the scenes shots!

Some behind the scenes shots!

Yesterday, we shot the finale scene. We're still not finished to shoot (about 35% done or so). We were only two, so the lighting was minimal, I had to improvise for the sound as well, and ended up with great results so far. We've even been able to take some pictures while preparing the scenes:
We had to make place, in a very small room filled with a lot of stuff..

Always serious, even between takes:

The last scene we shot yesterday, still a lot to come:

Note the boompole, lying on a pillow to get the best possible position, while having it "fixed".

As for sound, for other scenes that didn't required any camera movement, I boomed the audio as close as possible over his head, right over the frame. Did some quick reviews of the shots, and the mic isn't visible in them!
Can't wait to start editing!

First VFX Shot

I'm currently working on a VFX shot for the Finale scene of the film. Here's the video:

Does it looks realistic? It's the third version I've made, which looks the best to me. The scene implies some colorless smoke to emanate from the computer fan.

Love the back light that's visible in that shot. Used a Neon light on the desk behind.

Scene 52:
MVI_2934 (0-00-17-09).jpg
Tried to hide the Neon light from behind the "Sprite" glass in this shot.

Neon is slightly visible, but in the final edit, the shots will be quite quick, so it probably won't be visible that much.

I like the lighting on the ground, kind of isolate him a bit.

MVI_2938 (0-00-14-05).jpg
Wanted a wide shot, implying the importance of the computer in that one.

That shot, on which I'll probably try until the shot is close to perfect to me. Might take longer than the editing in fact!

Production is still going well, I'm glad it's getting done!

So we had another beautiful day of shooting, with 4 actors! We ended up with some nice shots, despite a quite cloudy afternoon.

SCENE 15:

Shot with the Nikkor 50mm prime, at about f/2.8, with a ND0.9 and Polarizing filter, ISO100 and 1/48th.

EDIT: I had to crop a bit the framing because there was some reflections on the filters, from behind the camera. I'll really have to look for a knicker soon to fix such issue. Not the first time. These donuts aren't 100% bulletproof...

EDIT: we can see that he had the script on him, to help with the lines as we were tight in time, and had no time to reshoot.
Also, the boom pole is visible!

Before someone points the "underexposed" picture, the actor's been intentionally put in the shade while Joseph was more or less "properly" lit. Any inconsistency in the lighting results from the cloudy day we had, slightly more sunny when we begun than when we finished.
Again, any comments or criticism is appreciated!

Scene 45-47-49-51

Scene 45-47-49-51

And again, another night of shooting! Had fun, despite the mosquitos and the minimal crew (I was alone, operating the camera and managing audio)!
We shot 4 scenes:

SCENE 45:
MVI_2970 (0-00-30-02)_1.jpgMVI_2972 (0-00-12-10).jpgMVI_2972 (00839).jpgMVI_2973 (0-00-21-06).jpgMVI_2974 (0-00-10-01).jpg
First scene with the trees is nice I think. Other scenes aren't bad, simple "portrait" shots with a nice background.

SCENE 47/49/51:
MVI_2975 (0-00-11-00).jpgMVI_2978 (00878).jpg
I tried to use a cellphone light to help lighting his face, but not sure if I'll keep it in the edit...

MVI_2981 (01108).jpgMVI_2982 (00547).jpgMVI_2983 (00248)_1.jpg
A bit softer, but despite the lack of light (and the slight rain that started in the middle of our shooting), I had to "push it" in post a bit.

Scene 46/48/50 and 53

Scene 46/48/50 and 53

Yet another night of shooting! We originally spotted a nice place, with an open public phone but there was too much traffic and people around, the sound wouldn't have been as great. So we ended up in a very rural place, isolated public booth and we shot there. Not the original concept, but worked pretty well too.
Here's some pictures:

SCENE 46/48/50:
MVI_2990 (0-00-17-08).jpgMVI_2995 (0-00-16-14).jpgMVI_2994 (0-00-43-23).jpgMVI_3078 (0-00-16-04).jpgMVI_3078 (0-00-24-19).jpgMVI_2997 (0-00-21-04).jpg
The conversation that will fit with scenes 45-47-49&51 with Joseph.

SCENE 53:
MVI_3000 (0;00;07;11).jpgMVI_3004 (0;00;12;36).jpg
This scene was not scripted at first, but with the choice of music for the ending, we've added that scene. It will mostly be used as "fill" in an "inter-cut" with the BOSS character last scene in the movie. I've shot it two way: 24p (which is a tad jerky, but ok) and 720/60p which gives nice slow motion, but it's a bit noisy due to the 1/60th shutter speed...Not bad, but quite noisy. Maybe I'll try a Color-to-Black&White transition on these shots. We'll see.

Scene 12-40-52

Scene 12-40-52

Just had some time last Sunday to shoot some scene, last ones remaining with Joseph with his beard:

SCENE 12:
MVI_3083 (0-00-10-15).jpgMVI_3085 (0-00-31-08).jpgMVI_3087 (0-00-18-02).jpg
First shot is the result of multiple framing and test in the living room. With the mirror up his head, I wasn't able to get the TV in it without seeing myself, and as we'll use his kitchen for other scenes that takes place at a different location, I wasn't able to put the camera more on the left...so I ended up doing the shot that way. I would have loved to have brought my Induro Hi-Hat to get a lower shot of that scene, but it's not that bad.
I love the lighting on the third shot, half lit.

SCENE 40:
MVI_3093 (0-00-11-17).jpgMVI_3096 (0-00-17-09).jpg
I originally wanted a wide scene in front of a window with a nice view. Haven't got the chance to shoot at the original location, so we shot where Joseph lives. Not bad, in a way it works in our favour, as he's more "average" that we could think when we see it at the meeting.

SCENE 52:
MVI_3099 (0-00-10-16).jpgMVI_3101 (0-00-10-15).jpg
These have been done in the middle of the afternoon, with only the curtains closed. Used the 18-55mm lens at f/3.5 ~18mm, with the minimal lighting in the scene. Worked out pretty well, for a scene that takes place after 10pm!

SCENE 21 - Green Screen shot

SCENE 21 - Green Screen shot

A little while since I posted in here!
I'm still shooting the last remaining scenes this month, then it'll be finished. Well, the edit will remain, but at least, I'll have everything shot.

I've done some green screen recently. We had to shoot a scene with the main character aiming with an M4, in a parking downtown. Obviously, we weren't allowed to shot directly with the M4 (even if it's an airsoft) so I had to go green screen not to get into trouble.
All in all, it went pretty well. I put my kitchen into a mini studio and shot the scene there, then matched it with the background, previously shot last summer. Here's some results:

Yes, the wall has been made with 6 dollar-store neon green board! Ended up working pretty good with the lighting!
2x 10w 6000k LED lights from ebay. 1x DIY CFL light, made out of 4"PVC tube and using a 23w 3500k CFL bulb.

This is the final result, the composited is on the left while the original (for reference) is on the right:

How do you think it looks?

Haven't posted in a while, so here's the latest one. I'm in the editing process at the moment:
