I made a 72mm vari fader for my 85mm f1.4 nikkor lens today. I had a couple of circular polarizers both 72mm one hoya and one hama. I was able to unscrew the hama glass holding section (it has 2 little cuts in the ring for tightening on assembly at the factory) then turn the polarized glass around the other way, after reassembly I screwed the two filters together and voila! a perfect vari fader was made. It works fantastically well and can live on the lens. They are also easily unscrewed again if I need a single polarizer.

What's the final polarising effect like? Is it completely cancelled out (as if you didn't have a polariser attached at all) or do you still have the deepening skies/minimizing reflections effect of a single polarising filter?
