Mad People - Double J

I found out about this contest when it only had a week left. I know my project is rough as hell, but did anyone like any part of it?

We filmed this in about 90 minutes and edited it in about 60 minutes. It was fun though. Looking forward to the next contest so I can actually take more time setting up the "aesthetics" of a film.

Okay, take everything said w/ a grain of salt as this is obviously not a good example of something you can do given the right amount of time. Technically, it's pretty bad. Sound, visuals, framing, comps are all pretty boring, distracting or inconsistent. The acting wasn't ridiculously horrible like some of the films but still needed alot of work. The makeup was nonexistent. I think even though you had a short amount of time, a little halloween makeup, heavy eyeliner, or pretty much anything so the audience can distinguish who the zombies really are would have helped. All that being said, this one still isn't the worst I've seen. You tried a ballsy move with the head being cut off, so I give you props on that, especially because you didn't totally bomb on it. It wasn't excellent, but once again...I saw alot worse from some of the films that people had alot more time on. I look forward to seeing your next entry.

I agree %100 with everything Slim said. The one thing I REALLY liked was the last line.

To quote my notes on your short,
"Where were you going with this film? Where were you trying to take me as a viewer? Was it meant to play like a dark comedy?"

Bottom line: I feel you should have spent some more time in writing/pre-production stage. No matter how small the production, proper planning is crucial. If you don't have a clear cut direction of where you want to go as a filmmaker, then the final product will leave audience with more questions than answers.

Good luck on your future projects.

Superkid, my notes from when I watched this last Saturday: Rated well below average for poor audio, story, picture, acting & FX.

Bottom line, the amount of time you put into a project will almost ALWAYS show. If you only put 90 minutes into the actual production, then you should put at LEAST 3 hours into the editing ... I can't believe you'd only give this 60 minutes for post. Post is often times where you can try & clean things up, fix mistakes, improve upon something, etc. Then again, it can rarely work magic, so it depends on what you go into it with.

I've also noticed that we're over 1/2 way through with this voting period, and you only have one post ... then one you started this thread with. I hope to goodness that you're watching everyone else's films, like you're hoping their watching yours, and commenting on them all as well ... before this is all over in the next week. Even if you can't vote, you should be commenting.

A world run by vegetarians...scary!!!!

Anyway, I didn't hate it and didn't love it. Everything was merely mediocore. Liked the beheading though.

Obviously, even with your limited time constraints (I faced those as well), you should have spent a lot more time in post. There were things you could have polished up more and fixed somewhat.

Overall, its just ok.

Good work!

Robert

Okay I played the beheading two or three times and I laughed equally hard each time... that's a good thing. It's the other guy's face that gets revealed that does it for me.

You had an original premise and I liked the two main characters, plus I like the move of not showing the kill (in the bathroom) but rather covering it with a simple approach (that's actually done a lot in full-budget features)... "****" says it all. The guy knows he's not getting out of it.

Clearly the audio needed to get fixed... the mix and channels were f-ed up.

Also I agree that you coulda' done SOMETHING with the makeup issue... freakin' dust up the zombies with FLOUR for crap's sake!

This was a low-effort approach that actually wasn't really bad... but man the scary thing is you coulda' had a pretty good flick with just a little more time and effort put into it... I mean not much either. You had a good base to start with...

... I'm growing some porkchops now... it just seems cool all of a sudden.

Hey I also want to agree that the last line is good... and ironically true... it makes me want to pull this thread in a whole philosophical direction. I'm hoping to have a little more social commentary on some of my future projects 'cause I get where you're coming from.

Still hold out your hand so I can slap it with a yardstick... THERE... now spend just a little more time on your next go around!

Thanks to Everyone

Thanks to Everyone

Thank you so much for the critiques. I have been watching everyone else's films and I haven't posted much because they all look, for the most part, to be WAYYYYYYYYYYY more polished. I don't know what good my comments would be right now. I'm just starting out with this kind of stuff but I can see how much I still have to learn. I was embarrassed to show this cause it was so rough...hell, the kid who gets his head cut off would only do that scene if I gave him a urine sample so he could pass a piss test.

Regardless, I am looking forward to the next contest and looking forward to spending more than a day on it.

BTW: I know you should spend more time in post and I would have, but I only had one more hour before the deadline passed.

I just ran out of time.

Once again, thanks to everyone. These comments are incredibly useful.

LOL, well you had the courage to put it out there and try to learn something knowing it was not exemplary of your work - that's commendable.

Aslo you have the necessary "get it done" attittude for this.

I've paid actors in equally strange ways.

Haven't seen your filck but I will watch it tonight.
