Mackie 1620 w/ Boom recorder Timecode?

I am about to start a project. I am going to be using a Mackie 1620 Firewire out to boom recorder so I can keep all the mics on their own channels but I will be recording to a 702T also for a mixdown backup. I want a backup so if the comp goes down in the middle of a take I do not loose the take. But my question what is the best way to get the timecode into boom recorder? I dont think th 1620 has a wordclock in so I am thinking I will not have a timecode with the boom recorder takes. But at least the mix I do to the 702t will have timecode. Any advice on getting timecode into boom? This will be my first time working with boom.

Other question I think it can but can the 702t be used as the timecode generator for the cameras or will we need to get a generator?

feed timecode from 702t through a channel of the onyx. BR will read this and convert to TC. Make sure you set tc preference in br to LTC( I think) so it reads external tc. I always record the tc channel but it is not necessary to arm that track if you don't want to

also, I wouldnt trust the mackie internal clock to stay in sync for more than 10 minute rolls

So I was just wondering has anyone tried running from line out on the 702T to a Mackie1602 then firewire out to a Macbook Pro? I am trying this now to test the timecode but I am not getting a timecode signal out to Boom Recorder. I am getting audio out to boomrecoder but no timecode. If anyone has any advice please let me know. I am getting prepaired for a movie in a few months. I know way early but want to test it out now instead of last min.

Timecode flow: (Split TC signal to your devices.)

A.) Camera/TC Gen (Master) > Mackie 1620 (Slave) > via Firewire > MacBook > Boom Recorder App.

B.) Camera/TC Gen (Master) > SD 702T (Slave)

Day 1 - TC = 1:00.00.00.00
Day 2 - TC = 2:00:00:00:00
etc...

--------------------------------------------------------
Audio Signal Flow:
Mics/Lav/Boom > Mackie 1602 > SD 702T (Left / Right or using sends/aux)

Hope that Helps.

The way I do it is to treat the time code signal as audio - I use my slate as the tc source, so I have a cable that goes 1/4" to xlrm and plug it in to a channel on the board - Boom Recorder catches it right away and syncs. Not sure what the TC out looks like on the 702, but you'll need some sort of an adapter cable.

BTW, not sure how the 702 will react, but my slate really doesn't like phantom power. :-)

The SD 702T uses a Multi-Pin connector for TC. Refer to User guide, Page 12. So you need this connection.

NOTE: Beware that using TC on Audio channels on mixers can sometimes bleed if not properly setup correctly.

Last, make sure your connections are using proper cables (Balance +4db, Unbalanced -10db) and that you are using "Line In". Last, there is no need to run Phantom power on Channel for TC. (Phantom power are for mics)

Thanks for the responses but I think I may have found the solution. When I called sound device to ask them they said the 702t does not send the time code signal through the Line or SPIF outs. So there is no way to get the timecode from the 702T into the mackie for boomrecoder. I have found though that I can get a Ambient 301RG Master Radio Slate and 3 Ambient TC-TRX recievers which will recieve the time code signal. I will then have a reciever running lemo cable to out Red One cam and to my 702T that will keep them synced. Then have another reciever that has a lemo to XLR cable run that into my mackie which will give boom recorder timecode. From what I red the master radio slate will resync ever time the slate is closed. I dont know why sound devices wont do timecode with the xlr or spif but that is what they told me. Also I notice that the Foster 204 has timecode xlr in/out. So fostex has that as a plus but I still like the 702T better. This is the solution I have come up with if anyone has any other solutions please let me know. And thanks again for the replies.

Use the timecode out (lemo) connection on the 702T?

Am I reading correctly that you're trying to use your SLATE as the timecode master? Uhh why?

The slate is a time code generator too. It would work as the master time code. The slate we are looking at sends out a radio signal then you have receivers that have lemo out or xlr out to sync multiple devices. I think it works by resyncing the time code each time you slate the scene. So you know the devices are all in sync at the beginning of each scene. Why would using the slate for time code be so bad?

But yes the lemo out from the 702t should work. That is the one thing we did not think about. It is always something obvious that is the answer.

Don't over complicate this.

702T is your master.
Lemo out using the $70 sound devices xl-lx cable

Split the xl-lx feed -

Run Time of Day unless otherwise asked, so you can jam your slate, disconnect,
rejam every 4-5 hours.

-hardwire to your mackie input. (careful of bleed. you might want to throw a pad in so its hiting the board at a lower volume)

-On most camera's you would be fine jamming and disconnecting like the slate BUT on
the Red it's known for losing timecode frames, etc at the drop of a hat (new batt, shut down..etc) So either rent/buy a lockit box to slap on the camera then you can jam that like the slate and disconnect and the box continues to feed the red camera the proper timecode. OR send a hardwire to the RED, OR send via wireless.
