Moving to LA, maybe next week

I now live in West Hollywood...only minutes to Beverly hills and hollywood. Charli...West Hollywood and parts of Beverly Hills still have rent control. A lot of Santa Monica got rid of theirs years ago. Rent increase about 2-5% at the most under these conditions. West Hollywood is a very liberal town but their is very little if any homeless living around as compared to the many in Venice or Santa Monica. Not to mention it is an incorporated city and not under the taxation of the City of Los Angeles but is considered County of L.A. Here is a site to look at rents to give you an idea. Oh by the way...Famous Sunset Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd clubs and Bars are in West Hollywood. Not to mention most of the industry hot spots are in West Hollywood. Click on the residential referal list. But don't sign up for companies like westside rentals..it is best to just drive up and down and jot down numbers around the 15th and 30th of any month. Oh by the way...the city is small...like 4.0 miles and you can walk and use public transportation and many taxis are around especially near Sunset and Santa Monica Blvd. And you are only 20 mins to the beach but away from the noisy LAX airport that is found near the beach cities.

Funny you should say that... the house that I shot my short in was famous for "those" kinds of movies... I didn't dare bring in a black light...

Wow, $715 is amazing. I was paying $950 for a studio in Hollywood. That went up to $1050. I definitely want to check NoHo, Studio City, and even Culver City.

Yeah, the main reason I moved into this area is to save $$$. Actually, there's a bachelor pad available if you're interested.

AGOURA HILLS

I love that place. About 30 min west of Hollywood/Burbank area. Great area, little more spendy, but I love it. 15 min north of Malibu.

Silverlake, Burbank, Hollywood, North Hollywood, Studio City, Woodland Hills, Tarzana (well, the whole string of communities along the 101 between Glendale and Woodland Hills, really), Chatsworth, Venice, Santa Monica, Los Feliz, the West Side and Miracle Mile (in no particular order, although personally I like Silverlake the best, and anywhere in the SF Valley, the least) are all possibilities.

Maybe you should find yourself an apartment-by-the-month, and use it as a base from which to explore and find where you *really* want to live. It worked pretty well, for me...

What's good about Silverlake/Burbank/Glendale/Hollywood/North Hollywood/Studio City, is that they are all very close to the Universal/MCA+Warner Brothers+CBS+NBC+Disney+Sunset-Gower+Prospect Studios cluster around the Burbank/Hollywood area. Any time I work on one of those lots, I have nice short commute times. Of course, if I have to go over to Fox or Sony or any of the beach stages, or up to Valencia, that's a different story.

just came from Lucy's El Adobe on Melrose.
Used to go there all the time, when working for Carolco. Best. Margaritas. Ever.

If you want to get around on the freeways in reasonable time, ride a motorcycle. More slugs in cars arriving every day, and we're presently up to probably about 18/6 gridlock, on our way soon to 24/7. So your choice of where to live might be influenced by how much freeway lies between you and the places you expect you'll want to be going.

i'm just south of West Hollywood between the Melrose shopping district and The Grove/Farmer's Market. And there is a small Erewhon Market two blocks away, a smart & final two blocks in the other direction. also within three blocks are a Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Tea Lea, Canter's deli on fairfax ave, and a Vegan Thai cafe with great Pad Thai. all of which means there are enough options within walking distance. and plenty more that will deliver to you -- India's Oven is at my doorstep every other night. we don't have the beach, obviously. but that is remedied with a short drive down fairfax, right onto venice and you're there in less than 30 minutes.

in this area, I pay $1675 for a fairly large one bedroom (living room is 19'x15', bedroom is about 15'x12'). i've lived here three years and haven't heard a single instance of a break-in (apartment or car), or any other crime. And I think that can be attributed to the Hasidic Jewish community nearby. the men establish a very visible presence on the street, effectively providing a sort of neighborhood watch, i guess.

here's some camera test footage that briefly shows what the neighborhood looks like around my apartment. for reference. [link]

anyway, that's what it's like in my neck of the woods. I've also lived in glendale, noho, santa monica near smc, and palms/culver city. and this is by far my favorite location of the bunch. but i've got my eye on silverlake next.

Silverlake is good. Come over for a walk-around sometime; I'll show you some of the local goodies (if you aren't hip to them, already).

Charlie-

When I lived there (left in 2001), I lived in Newbury Park (fantastic rural community but 30+ minutes from LA) and Reseda and Encino. Reseda and Encino was 20-25+minutes from the beach but they were decent communities and close enough to LA. So, from a financial standpoint, they are two towns to consider.

Yeah, Silverlake is where I'm staying now. Pretty nice little neighborhood. Another friend lives in Koreatown, which seemed pretty nice and quiet and only a few minutes from here.

You guys are so blessed to be crashing out there where the is is happening.

I'll be out there between late April and October 2007.

Thanks for the 411 guys.

Nearest one's on Sunset between Highland and LaBrea, baby!

There's a Ralleye's closer by, which is an adequate substitute.

I want to thank every person who's put in their two cents. It helped a lot. Thank you also for th e links, advice, much I have taken to heart. I'll be leaving for LA on Monday or Tuesday, I think we'll stay in a hotel for a month in Santa Monica and go from there, the advice to see what's there is a good one.

I hope to be seeing those of you who live in LA soon. Thanks again, for your help, I've read these posts over and over to make a decision. Thanks.

Charli
