I had a good experience with Mack and a Canon Digital Elph camera a couple years back. The camera developed a problem in which the CF cards would become corrupted. Reformatting and buying new cards yielded the same results. Mack fixed the camera pretty quickly (some problem with the reader), and it's been fine ever since.

I generally agree that these extended warranties are a scam, but you have to make a decision based on the cost of the item vs. the warranty cost. In this case it made sense. Five years ago, decent digital cameras were quite expensive.

I disagree with Jan's comment that manufacturing defects will manifest themselves within a year. I've had video cameras, digital still cameras, and other electronics develop issues after the one-year mark. If a piece of equipment "goes bad" after 18 months of proper use, that's still a manufacturing defect in my eyes.

So to wrap up: Warranties are useless, except when they're not!

Ron

Thanks for sharing this info. I was considering adding an extended warranty from Mack for my next purchase, but will wait to see what experience others have had.

Just wondering what other extended warranty facilities are out there and what experience users have had?

I realize everyone's experience is difference, but I have made use of several Mack Warranties and I have never had an issue or problem with their service. They fixed the problem to my satisfaction and returned my various cameras very promptly. I am sorry for the bad experience you are having.

I have to second CW's comments. My DVC80 developed an issue with the tape drive assembly pretty close to four years after I bought it. Not only would my only camera and sole means of financial support not record or play, but I was completely unable to even eject the current tape.

I actually took apart the door assembly and removed the tape myself (somewhat forcibly), then tried to put it back together. The camera still didn't work, so I had to send it in for repair. Of course the tech knew I'd fiddled with it, but he was kind enough to fix it anyway. Came back in about a month and has worked great ever since.

I'll definitely be buying another Mack with my next camera.

Now, having said all that, it was my impression during that exchange that the repair crews are actually hired out - independent contractors hired by Mack rather than an in house staff. Sort of like buying windows or siding from Sears. They hire local contractors to actually do the work, rather than train and employ a nationwide staff of window and siding experts. If that's the case, then I can see where experiences may differ.

Mack camera tried to fix the Firewire port on my Sony VX2000 camera. When I sent it back to them they told me that I had given excess voltage to the camera and have damaged the firewire port. Therefore they didn't need to fix it.

After talking to them on the phone several times, they told me that they knew it was an issue with the camera and I should take it up with Sony.

Talking To Sony, they said "well send it to an authorized sony dealer"

I'm just so angry with Mack Warranty since they tried to pass the buck to Sony, and wouldn't repair my camera after I bought the warranty.

And you can spam these message boards as much as you want Mackcam, but all you have to do is google "Mack Camera Warranty problems" and you'll see for yourself that its pretty much a crapshoot to see if Mack honors the warranty and decides to fix your camera or not.

Maybe if you didn't rub customers the wrong way, they wouldn't be so vocal about how bad your service is. Think about that...

Is this some kind of bot spewing templated language posting over and over again?? If not, these people need to take a human cue on customer support from the posts of someone such as Andrew from Spec-Comm.
