Machete!

I like the political overtones, a LOT... other than that, well... it's Robert Rodriguez, the T-Pain of filmmakers :) Don't get me wrong I think he's an awesome guy, I watch all his DVDs for the commentaries and special features; even read his book. I mean it's possible to really like someome, even respect them for who they are without digging their creative endeavors... right?

Rakesh, I actually think this is where Rod shines: all out shameless action/fun movies. I feel like his Grindhouse was a ton of fun, and (at least the first) Spykids might have been his best film. Likewise, Sin City.

So I'm a fan of him going balls out on stuff like this. I agree with Batutta, he should drop the 70s vibe and just make low budget ass kicking films. Create a new grindhouse movement. Ultimately, no one cares about the 70s stuff I think.

I feel the same way about Raimi. Seeing DRAG ME TO HELL in the theater was one of the funnest theater experiences I can remember. Ever. It was an all out Party at the Bklyn theater I saw it at. People were loud as hell, but all noise was in tune with the action on screen. This is where Raimi just rules. And I hope he makes more schlock horror.

But this looks fun.

I agree about dropping the 70s stuff but he's a pretty derivative guy, I realize everything at this point in time is very derivative, but I think he especialy needs it as a crutch to help people understand he's being campy, otherwise it may come across like The Happening where most people didn't get that he (M Knight) was making a B movie parody for his critics. But that's just me, I'm glad people are looking forward to it, I really like him, the sincere effort he puts forth and the wisdom he freely shares in his commentaries. Just wish he was a better or atleast a slightly more creative writer.

Right...I'm sure that's how he sold it to the studios who funded it, "I want to make a really crappy movie just to shut my critics up! Give me 100 million please!"

wow, you know your not suppose to mix up drugs and fall asleep, right?

we are 3 pages in.

Well, with the beautiful weather, I have been working more and more from the WIFI-enabled beer-garden around the corner...maybe it's time to cut back a bit...

Robert didn't do it that way, he pre sold international for $20M to Sony, he got another few million for other foreign territories that weren't in the Sony deal and borrowed another $5M himself. Budget was $30M ish.

After it was made or I should say shot (not finished) several studios made bids for it, Paramount had it for $9M domestic and 10% gross to RR, RR's agent renigged went back to the big P wanting more back end, P said no so FOX ended up giving him the $9M domestic and 12% gross, he already has the Predators project with FOX and they want to keep him at FOX.

As far as I know there is no set P&A commitment from FOX, he wanted one but didn't get it. It'll be on a test market basis.

I was referring to M Night and The Happening. There's this idea floating out there that it was intended as some kind of subversive parody, as its the only way people can fathom him making such a terrible film, which I find ridiculous. It was just a lousy movie. Machete is clearly a genre send up.

I respectfully disagree Batutta. M Knight, like him or hate him (I'm on the fence myself) is a meticulous filmmaker. All the visual flubs is a dead giveaway, I guarantee they were a 100% intentional. And all the overdramatic shots he's known for were very exaggerated on purpose. Robert and M Knight are two filmmakers who's movies I have issues with for drastically different reasons but I totally respect and follow their works, also for drastically different reasons. Robert is a true diy, get-er-done, by any means necessary type of guy and M Knight is freaking meticulous. Doesn't mean I like a lot of their works but I feed off of the energy they put out and find inspiration in them. Kevin Smith is another auter I feel similarly about but, that's another thread for sure. :)
Good discussion!

But to what end would he do that? For the few people that might get it?...I find it highly unlikely he would stake his reputation and the studios money on a big joke.

That's ridiculous. Parodies are supposed to be funny; they aren't supposed to suck.

After Lady in the Water tanked, dude took a major psychological blow. To me The Happening is a big middle finger to his detractors and the critics. I think he's the type of person bent enough to say F-you through a studio movie and not give a **** or feel justified considering the mental trauma that Lady in the Water caused him.

That's what you want to believe, but there is no proof for that. There is far more proof that he intended The Happening to be a good film, and made a bad one.

I'm with Batutta on this one. The Happening wasn't.

Lady in the Water was not a good movie and the criticism was warranted. He peaked on The Sixth Sense and has pretty much been going downhill since then.

I'm telling you the visual flubs are a dead give away. This dude is super anal about what appears on screen.

Are you saying he made that whole film as a joke that would only be funny to him? Because I find it highly unlikely he could have gotten the studio, his actors and his crew to go along with his multi million dollar in joke. "Hey Mark, want to act in my movie that I'm making intentionally bad, and you will act badly in it, but nobody will know it's a joke and you'll just look like an idiot."...Not buying it for a second. The flubs are flubs. Good directors make bad films, sometimes the worst ones because they have the skills to put across a terrible idea so well it only magnifies the badness.
