Macau (China) by night, shot with the HVX

This was a small test I did with the HVX shooting at night. The noise you see on the blacks IS NOT on the raw footage I edited. Viewed on a Plasma TV, and on my HD CRT 32", its PERFECT. There was something weird going on on the H264 conversion...

Anyway, its got a nice tune and shows a bit of my hometown at night, so enjoy!

(I suggest you view the video at Half Size, to get a closer Idea of how the raw footage looks like...)

The footage looks great on my Mac. I didn't see any noise at all.
I liked the edit a lot. I felt like I was watching the opening of a film.
If you kept the same edit and added some fake credits over it, you'd probably be able
to raise money for a feature. (Probably be good to have a story however.)

Thanks for the feedback, Seamus! I'm planning on shooting an independent short film with an ambience close to what you see in this clip. Unfortunatelly, financing here is very hard to get, since there's ZERO support whatsoever for short films. I've been slowly purchasing equipment with my day job, and am almost ready to start production.

All I need is willing actors (good ones) and some locations. Unfortunatelly, enthusiastic professionals (like this wonderful community) are very few, so this is also a hurdle... But, hey, hard work is part of the fun, isn't it? :)

(Why am I getting noisy display of the footage on my Powerbook? Probably some Quicktime settings problem...)

I'm on a PC (Dell Precision w/ Flatscreen) and see nothing but gorgeous imagery. Love it ! Has a kind of Collateral vibe in many of these shots.

I cannot get over how great the reds look and the clarity of the buildings.

John, thanks for the remarks... I feel exactly like yourself... I just can't believe the quality of this camera... Its the perfect digital camcorder for filming over here (with neon lights and extreme colours). Its a camera that would make Christopher Doyle proud! (Maybe I'm exagerating, but I really love the filmic look this camera produces...)

The band is Madredeus, a portuguese band. One of my favourites, by the way :) . The album is " Madredeus Electronico"- its a remixes album from major producers, like Craig Armstrong and others. I don't know who did this remix, tough. The original stuff is better :) .

There's a small dissolve problem on the clip at the beginning, due to some lazy editing, but I think it shows the film look this camera produces... Man, now if I could get some talented people to back me up on a short... :)

i see the noise that you are talking about, but the only way is looking at the monitor on an angle (for me anyway) BUT that's the big thing i'm always wondering when ever i look at footage that is posted, is it on the raw footage? or is it the compression that magnifies the noise............i'm glad to hear it's not in the raw footage

wish i could get a dvd image of this to burn! cause i bet it would look killer on my "big screen"
 
I watched it on my big screen (DVI-out) and I saw the noise. The doesn't mean it doesn't look great, though... because it does.

Did you not read his post mentioning the noise from H264 encoding?
