MAC vs. PC

Hey all,

If you had a choice, for pratical reasons, between using a MAC or PC laptop on the field for offloading from the hvx, which would you choose and why?

Also, we must edit on final cut pro.

As of TODAY, the choice is PC, because of the availability of the P2 Viewer software. Of course, next week or next month or three months from now someone may introduce a new P2 Viewer type of program for the Mac, and that would negate that advantage.

Now, if Serious Magic introduces HD Rack for the PC, then that moves it back up to the top of the list too. That would be unbeatable.

But then there's the MacBook Pro -- which, with the BootCamp software, can run both PC and Mac software. So why not use it? Because no PCMCIA slot -- so if Duel-Technologies gets theirs out soon, that would probably make the MacBook Pro the ultimate HVX field tool. FCP, HD Rack, P2 Viewer, Edius Broadcast, and PCMCIA P2 offloading all in one.

So if you asked me this question six months from now, I'd say "no question: Macbook Pro." But since you're asking it today, I'd lean towards the PC.

I've seen your posts, Barry, about your objection regarding the import of data to FCP, and now that I've done it a few times, I don't really understand your objection. Yes, you aren't editing against the original MXF files, but so what? The import and wrap into QT takes almost exactly the same amount of time that it takes to simply copy the MXF files off of a P2 card. Not saying you're "wrong" or anything, but is there a deeper reason you don't like this arrangement?

To both contradict and back-up JJ - I'm having no hassles using a combo of the P2 Store and FCP. I don't currently have a laptop to use in the field (hanging out for the Macbook Pro price drop) so the issue of 'double handling' the mxf files (P2 card > store > FCP/HDD) doesn't bother me because it's necessary - and as a result the FCP unwrap causes me no heartache, because it's combined with the necessary import off the P2 store.

However I certainly see the advantage in going straight from the cards to your software - particularly if you get serious about having your editor cutting while you're shooting.

I don't know if any Apple people peruse these boards - does anybody know if FCP is contemplating the sort of integration we're seeing from Edius?
