Mac/Tiger Question

My G4 has been running OS 10.3.9 for some time. Apparently I waited too long to get a Tiger upgrade, because now nobody has them. I can't really run Leopard on this, since it is a 800mhz, 512mb machine.

I was thinking of doing a clean install from the Tiger disc that I got for my G5, but the disc states that it's for ...well, a G5.

Am I crazy to try this, or does anyone have any ideas for options.

FWIW, I need to do this so I can get my taxes done. The new Turbo Tax won't run on anything older than 10.4 and all my financial files and old returns are on this machine.

Pulled from Wiki, the system requirements for running Tiger.

The system requirements of the PowerPC edition are:[5]
PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
Built-in FireWire
At least 256 MB of RAM (512 MB or 1 GB recommended)
At least 3 GB of available hard disk space; 4 GB of disk space including the Xcode 2 Tools
DVD drive (CD media exchange was available; offer ended March 19, 2007)

Yeah, I know Tiger will run on my G4. I'm just curious if I can load it safely using the Tiger disks that came with my G5.

I'm actually kinda freaked about doing this. I've been running this Mac on this OS for about 2.5 years. I'm pretty good about keeping my files on a separate internal drive, but I can't help thinking I'm gonna forget about something and lose it forever with a clean install.

There's also a couple of software apps (like Photoshop 7) that I can't find the disks for to re-install them.

I also need to figure out how to save all the e-mails in mac mail.

Doesn't work. When I reboot to do the install it tells me that it can't load the software on this computer.....

Whoever told you "yes you can" is seriously clueless. I always assume that people don't give advice on anything unless they are absolutely 100% sure of something. Well, the reality is quite different.

Now, on to your question. Whatever OS discs that come with your computer are specific to that computer model ***ONLY***. Hope that is clear. So, if it's an iBook 1.33Ghz, then the discs from it will NOT work on f.ex. an iMac.

The reason is that there are specific files and drivers which only apply to that model of computer.

What you want is the RETAIL generic version of the OS - that you can install on any computer that meets the specs for that OS.

In other words, you need to locate retail Tiger discs and install from those.
