Mac Pro

ho long until programs are able to take full advantage of parallel processors? anyone with some perspective? which aready are?

I am a self-declared mac person, but a couple of questions/concerns the presentation left me with:

--i found the mac pricepoint comparisons confusing. I mean they left out an expensive component, the graphics card. also, you can customize these things to cost upto like $20k.

--along those lines: I feel a little uninformed about how important a good graphics card is to editing. does it substantially reduce rendering time?

--i think i read somewhere here that the processors might be swapable. any truth to that, or am I just dreaming?

--anyone with a sense of how that "time machine" thing works and what the limitations might be on pulling up old material and files?

--missed the part about how these machines are cooled.

--what would be some good alternate brands, models, and prices for upgrades such as ram, hard drives, and dvd drives.

thanks in advance for anyone with info on one or all of these queries.

"Brandon Rice No kidding... plus, I can get a PC + Avid for cheaper than a good MAC."

First of all Avid DV sucks....now the Software only Avid Media Composer is very nice, but it's $5,000.00!

A high end graphics card will render your Motion projects a lot faster as it will Magic Bullet.

As for FCP yes and no. The Mac Pros CPUs and Ram will most likely take care of the rendering.

I'm sorry, but the amount of cash you throw down on a Mac plus FCP is still cheaper than getting a PC plus a decent Avid Media Composer that is even comparible to pushing out the same rendering speed.

doood.. troll another thread.

sorry... not tryin' to troll... anyway... glad ya'll like your Macs... my buddy, and composer just got a new Macbook and he's really happy with it, and his music is sounding better, because it's not crashing on him like his PC laptop did... so it's all good :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Brice isn't trolling; if he hates FCP, he hates it. Big deal.

Sigh

The MAC / PC rages on.

For more entertainment; see the Canon thread upstairs.

Vegas is amazing. Sony is just shooting themselves in the foot by insisting on staying proprietary (though that's nothing new). I really, really hope that RED can find a way to work with Sony and get their codec adopted within Vegas, but that will be my last holdout for the program. If their mantra continues to be "HDV all the way!" I will have no choice but to abandon ship. :(

no offense but what does any of this have to do with the mac pro. i agree with kovarova, sometimes mac enthusiasts just want some space to dork out a little.

Don't they have .mac accounts for that? ;-)

Sorry JY_Blue. Just having fun.

I think FCP and VEGAS should be on both OS. Why they are not is absurd. Of course, no one would probably buy a MAC if you could get FCP on a PC.

No wait; they have iLife. Sorry.

NOT TRYING TO RIP ON ANYONE HERE- JUST MAKING AN OBSERVATION:

IMO, Mac is to PC as DVX is to XL2.

They'll all do the job, but there's only two pieces of equipment in that analogy that I'd actually get excited about working with.

Two posters say they hate FCP and/or macs, but are then surprised when another poster rips on Vegas? To each his own, fellas.

Besides which, how is it that inevitably, people who dislike a certain type/brand of equipment will ALWAYS show up to comment in threads where people are fans? I'm probably guilty too, but it's weird.

Almost like everyone has to constantly convince himself that he not only made the right purchase, but that his purchase is better than the other guy's.

:)

Not to choose sides here but it seems Briceman gets a pass when he says he hates FCP but you what to know specifics about why someone else dislikes Vegas...hmmmmm.

Disclaimer: I have a couple of Macs and run FCP. But I could really care less what someone else uses...unless they're collaborating with me. If it works for you, great. Use it. Be happy with it. When someone comes in bashing another product, any product, I tend to see someone trying to feel better about what they've sunk their money into by trying to convince others that their product is superior.

If you're happy with what you're using, I'm happy for you. I'm happy with what I'm using but you don't see me in other threads telling people that what they're using sucks. End of story.
