Would quad 4.1 be as good as a 8 core 3.1 though?

According the below link a 4,1 quad is faster than an 8-core 3,1.

Also, I believe the 4,1 machines can take new GFX cards than the 3,1 and if you have the most recent version of Mountain Lion you can drop in 'regular' versions of many cards and the OS will see them.
Can confirm as accurate. I upgrade my gfx cards now like I'm on PC. The only thing missing is the start up screen - if your mac requires maintenance hanging on to the original card is a good idea, however in every day work etc never an issue.
both towers can handle upgrades. people have used newer mac pro cards & even the sapphire radeon 3GB card (i have one)
also you can buy PCI USB3.0 cards for usb3 ports, upgrade to SSD as well.
as mentioned above, if you remove the original video card, you'll lose th estart up screen, or you can keep two video cards in.
