Mac Pro vs. Macbook Pro

I know this is a no brainer, I have FCS1 (FCP 5.0.4) but since I cannot get the FCP 5.1 disk anywhere, I have decided to get FCS2. I currently have a macbook, but Apple's website says the macbook will not run FCS2. Has anyone tried to run Studio 2 on a macbook? Second, I will be able to afford either a macbook pro or 8-core mac pro. I want the best render free editing and (believe it or not) cannot decide which one to get. I need some real life advice!

I own both and I can tell you, MacPro is the way to go for the most powerful editing experience, PERIOD. MBP is a powerful piece of a equipment too but its not the powerhouse the MacPro is....not by far. If you need portable, obviously MbP, if not MacPro is the best choice. It'll last you a long time too. I bought mine and I think I'm going to keep it as long as it turns on.

Before upgrading to FCP2 (unless you just want it anyway), be sure software update is working correctly. I went months unable to upgrade to 5.1.4 when I had previously had the version prior to a crash. Turns out FCP was stored in the wrong folder and Software update could not find it. I put it in the right place and an hour later was up and running again, and saved myself a bundle (because I don't need the new features of Studio 2).

Regarding the Macbook Pro, I struggled to edit with mine until I finally got a Firewire 800 drive, now it's very fast and I'm happy with it.

Thats great, except I only have Final Cut Studio with 5.0.4. I did not get the 5.1 update, and now I cannot get it anywhere! Im stuck in the 5.0.4 world 4 ever!

You can run FCS2 on a MacBook, just not all of the applications in the suite. Final Cut, Livetype, and Soundtrack will work. Color and Motion will not work because of the graphics card. So if you don't need those applications, then you will be fine.
